theer is a squadron of iaf su30mki dedicated to shore based maritime strike role based at lohegaon air force base near pune.

there is a lot of difference betwean a maritime strike aircraft and a maritime patrol aircraft.

a maritime strike aircraft is generally a fighter bomber having limited detection capability against a ship but on receiving target coordinates from a mpa in addition to its own radar info can launch an anti ship missile on a hostile ship and destroy it.

whereas a maritime patrol aircraft is specifically designed to detect enemy ships and submarines and engage them using its own weapons or to transmit the target information to other aircrafts like the maritime strike aircrafts.

these mpa's are sort of awacs dedicated to maritime role, they have a antio submarine capability which a maritime strike aircraft does not have (mpa's can carry and launch torpedoes which msa cant)

the mpa's are generally subsonic aircrafts(or modified civil aircrafts) having high endurance, long range sensors and more mission consoles and more crew as opposed to the msa which is usually a singe or double seater having very low endurance but high speed.

examples of mpa(maritime patrol aircrafts) are p3c orion,boeing 737 based mpa,atr72-500,cn234-m persuader,atlantic atl3,c212,do228,il38 ,tu142 etc.

examples of msa are jaguar,mig29k,rafale,boeing f-18,su-30mki etc.

hope you see the difference.

The Su-32/34 that is currently being ordered by the Russian Airforce, and is being looked upon as a future replacement of the Russian Navies older Tu-22's. As a patrol aircraft the Su-32/34 has very limited capabilities currently, eventually they would like to put a AESA radar system on the aircraft. This in theory dramatically increase the abilities to detect surface vessels. This is all dependent on how effective Russian AESA technology is, which I have heard little information on. The aircraft would still suffer from major shortfalls as an patrol aircraft including low loiter ability and range, no acoustic equipment, and no magnetic detection equipment.

You are referring to the Su 32FN or 34 as it was previously called, side by side seating, almost a doubling in weight, even has a galley and head.

the aircraft you are mentioning will fall under the category of msa .

the requirements of mpa are:

1)greater endurance.
2) as lancer mc has pointed out ability to carry acostic detection equipment.
3)ability to carry , launch and guide torpedos
4)ability to process a wide range of information for which it will require several operator consoles.
5)more personnel to operate the consoles.

'The Sea Dragon avionics complex integrated a Sea Snake coherent radar (claimed to be superior to the AN/APS-137 by a factor of between 25 and 30 per cent) with a MAD, a two-channel IR TV system, and a Hydrolocator. The aircraft used an Argon digital onboard computer and had a new display and control system compatible with the 72 sonobuoys which can be carried in an optional centreline pod. The buoys include passive and active, directional and non-directional buoys which are claimed to be superior to the American SSQ-53B, SSQ-75 and SSQ-77A buoys.....range 2,160 nm (4000 km; 2,485 miles), or 3,777 nm (7000 km, 4,350 miles) with inflight-refuelling"

Some nice pics.

"The Su-35 with advanced weapon system, stronger airframe and canards takes the max-takeoff weight to 34,000 kg (75,000 lbs). The normal takeoff weight of the much larger Su-32"FN" is 42,000 kg (92,600 lbs) with a max-takeoff weight of 44,360 kg (98,000 lbs).

Su-32"FN" has been characterized by Sukhoi as a "specialized strike fighter" and "a reliable guardian of sea borders". It would be, according to Western terminology, a "missionized reconnaissance-maritime-strike platform" intended for around the clock operations to search for, detect, classify, and then destroy, if necessary, waterborne or submarine targets.

It has been optimized for long-range patrol missions with multiple air refuelings extending to ten to fourteen hours. Once you enter the cabin from the built in stairs, you close up the entry area to access a small crew kitchen with a refrigerator and food-heating unit, a sewage disposal "john", and a first aid station that could serve as a place to laydown and sleep.

The Su-32"FN" is fitted with the "Sea Snake" avionics suite optimized for surface search, anti-surface warfare, mine-detection, reconnaissance, and anti-submarine warfare. The active radar is designed to ensure detection of waterborne targets and submarine wake trails within a dispersion area of more than 3,000 sq.-meters from 150 km range at high altitude. The "Sea Snake" is also capable of detecting airborne targets, including small ones, low over the sea out to 200 to 250 kilometers.

To detect submarines, 72 passive sonobouys are allocated in a wide range of frequencies with active directional hydroacoustical buoys and explosive wave generators. Performance characteristics of the Sukhoi sonobouys exceeds American products, according to a Sukhoi representative.

There is also a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD is contained in the rear stinger, which also contains a rear facing radar) employed with the sonobouys while the radar can detect small periscopes just breaking the wave tops."

"A navalized version intended for the Russian Navy features sea-surface surveillance, submarine reconnaissance, mine detection and capabilities facilitating attacks against enemy surface ships."

All in all a very interesting aircraft.

definitely it seems to be a very impressive platform, but do you know what is its endurance with a single engine or its no.of hours on station ability?

I think it's likely role is for those with undersea listening networks. A submarine is picked up on one, or reported by some other assett without the means to counter the submerged threat, say a civilian vessel spotting a periscope. The Su 32FN is sent to investigate, flying at supersonic speed it is quickly at the location while the sub is still in the area, then can spend hours playing cat and mouse with it. Sort of a supersonic Viking S3.

The 4000 km unrefueled range compared well with the Orion, which has a range of 3800 km.
