Sniper rifle question.

I know the M110 semi-automatc sniper rifle will replace the M24, but will it replace the M14/M21?

Also what is going to replace the USMC's M40A3 sniper rifles?

I've read reports of marine snipers using the SR-25/M110 (no need to carry an M16) in Iraq but I don't think it was a formal replacement.

There appears to be two schools at the moment. A/ accurate semi-auto (US Army) B/ bigger round eg. 300WM or .338LM (UK)

If I had to bet the marines might go big. They like to see themsleves as traditionalist.

As for as I know the M110 is only for the Army replacing the M24 and M14/21. Its not a replacement for the M16 becasue the M110 and M16 are for two completly different roles. It would be nice if they had both .308 and .300WM or .338LM for the M110. That way Army snipers can chose which round they like best. They did the same thing with the M24 so why not the M110?

As for the USMC I don't know what their going to use. .300WM or .338LM would be a very good choice though they should still have the .308 as an option. Maybe they will keep the M40A3 and possibly upgrade it or they could go for a new sniper rifle?

Any advantages over the Accuracy International L96A1?
Being the same calibre, probably nothing dramatic. The AI chassis is considered to be very sturdy but, there's nothing wrong with most sniper rifles.

Ultimately if a .338 LM is the go, wouldn't be a surprise they continue with the Remington-McMillan design; there are a few out there.
