Six GRP hulls for Danish Navy
Kockums has received an order to build six hulls and superstructures in fibre composite for the Danish Navy. The order also includes installation of complete propulsion systems.
The order has been won in fierce competition on the open market. The order secures manning levels at the composite workshops in Karlskrona up to 2007. Work on the order will start immediately, with final delivery scheduled for 2007.
Kockums will act as a subcontractor to Faaborg Vaerft A/S, which has received the order for these six vessels from Sjövärnets Materielkommando (SMK), which is the Danish equivalent of Sweden’s Defence Matériel Administration (FMV). The Coast Guard vessels will later be handed over to the Danish Navy.
“We are very pleased to have won this order, which confirms that Kockums is a step ahead of the competition. We command a strong position in this area and are at the technical cutting edge,†notes Kockums CEO Martin Hagbyhn.
At 43 metres in length, the vessels have a beam of 8.2 metres and displacement of 180 tonnes. Manned by a crew of 9 + 6, the vessels will be built in glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP).
Kockums designed and built similar hulls for the Danish Navy earlier, in the 1980s. The company has developed excellent relations with Denmark and, more recently, Kockums handled the modernisation and upgrade of a Swedish submarine for the Danish Navy, including responsibility for all support and maintenance.
Denmark’s decision is based on its extensive and positive operational experience with composites (about 20 years), gained with vessels such as the “Standardflex†series.
