Portuguese Air Force may buy 6 C130J Super Hercules

During the Farnborough Air Show 2004, the Portuguese Ministry of Defense demonstrated a great interest in acquiring six Lockheed Martin Tactical Systems C130J Super Hercules strategic transport aircraft.

The Força Aérea Portuguesa (Portuguese Air Force) needs to urgently replace its fleet of C130H and C130H-30, presently operated by Esquadra 501 from Base Aérea 6 (Air Base 6), at Montijo city. After they withdrew from the Airbus Military A400M programme, the Portuguese Air Force was left with only two options: either to modernise the present fleet or acquire new models and in this case it would have to be the C130J, due to the long and strong presence of Lockheed Martin company in Portugal. The US company develops several partnerships with the Portuguese OGMA-Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal SA company, working together in the F16 modernization programme (F-16A/B MLU) and the modernization of the six P3P Orion fleet of the Portuguese Air Force; besides, Portuguese OGMA company is an official international centre for maintenance of the C130 Hercules aircraft both civilian and military model.

The C130J Super Hercules is the latest model of the C130 model family, featuring a new glass cockpit, all digital avionics and a new propulsion system Allison AE 2100D3 turboprop engines (4 engines) with a six-bladed propeller, also delivered to the United Kingdom Royal Air Force, United States Air Force, United States Air National Guard, United States Marine Corps, United States Coastguard, Italian Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, Kuwaiti Air Force and to the Danish Air Force.
