Pakistan to buy missiles from Ukraine

By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW, NOV. 8. Pakistan may buy a large consignment of airborne missiles from Ukraine, a Ukrainian defence industry official was quoted as saying.

The head of a missile-building factory in Ukraine said that his company was about to sign a major contract with Pakistan.

The deal "will keep the factory busy for several years," the Itar-Tass news agency quoted Mr. Alexander Kachura, president of the Artyom state holding company, as saying, during a visit to the factory of the Ukrainian Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovich, last week.

Artyom is a leading manufacturer of air-to-air guided missiles for MiG and Sukhoi aircraft in the former Soviet Union.

The most important weapon for the PAF at this moment would be a BVR missile.
The Ukrainian missiles would be a Temporary solution as the real weapon of choice is the SD10 (partially based on the R-77,but alot more capable).
You see the R-77(AA-12) was of comparrison to the AIM-120 if not slightly better with a better range.
The SD-10 has a new motor designed by the chinese allowing for greater overall range and a marked improvement in performance over both the AIM-120 and the R-77. The radar homing seeker has been improved compared to the russian one it was based on.

Either way l feel that the eventual BVR,s of choice for pakistan will be the Darter Series (made in conjunction with the israeli Derby) and the SD10.
Will also be licensed produced in pakistan.
This leads us to the Question on where the Ukrainian missiles fit in.
They will have to be short range missiles to replace the current stock or a missile with a range further than the SD10 or simply a temporary solution untill the Darter Series or SD10 become operational (both of which have a fire and forget capability).
