Yeah I think I read about the engine being completely overhauled 'in' Pakistan by PAC for the first time and not manufacture or assembled!! Its a long way before we can start doing that. For now its still a great achievement to be able to overhaul them inside Pakistan and saving the valuable foreign exchange.

Islamabad, Jan 13 (UNI) Pakistan today rolled out its first indigenously overhauled US-origin T-56 engine for C-130 transport military aircraft.

''The indigenously overhauled T-56 engine is not only a step towards self-reliance, but will also save precious foreign exchange,'' Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said while speaking at the roll out ceremony.

Pakistan Air Force's C-130 fleet employs T-56 engines but had to send them abroad for overhaul and major repairs before. The PAF decided to set up an in-country overhaul capability due to the time recquired for repair and transportation besides financial considerations.

Mr Aziz said the country's defense was not only vital for its security but was also important for regional peace and stability, as strong defense was the best deterrent for any country and the best guarantee for peace.

''Pakistan has pursued a policy of having a deterrent capability in conventional and strategic areas so that we can protect ourselves,'' he said.

The Pakistani Prime Minister said the country strived for peace and had no aggressive desings against anybody but added, ''we must guard our sovereignty and territorial integrity with all the resources at our disposal.'' He said history had shown that the efforts put in to strengthen country's security internally and externally had helped maintain peace in this region.

Mr Aziz said Pakistan Air Force's role was critical for national security and was equally important during peace and tension.

''We have developed a strong capability in self reliance, indigenization and the state-of-art strength and capability to meet challenges,'' he said.

He said it was important that the Air Force not only has the capabilities to repair, but also to rebuild aircrafts and the related equipment needed to defend the country.

''We are committed to providing the necessary resources to the Pakistan Air Force so that they can maintain credible defence capability and have the latest equipment.

''Latest radars, weapon systems and modern aircraft will be needed to meet challenges of tomorrow. And through meeting the challenges of tomorrow we will ensure that Pakistan plays a credible role for peace and development in this part of the world,'' he said.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz lauded the performance of Pakistan Air Force for achieving ''all time lowest accident rate during 2004.'' During 2004, the PAF has flown highest number of operational flying hours ever flown in a year, with the lowest number of aircraft accidents ever recorded in a year.

Later, addressing the Principal Staff Officers of PAF, the Prime Minister acknowledged the critical role PAF is expected to play in any future conflict and assured that government would provide all possible help to PAF for meeting its requirements.

He said low accident rate acts as a force multiplier for the fighting forces. Considering the fact that PAF equipment is of old technology, the low accident rate is even more commendable, he added.

Mr Aziz also witnessed the award of certification of 'Authorised Military Overhaul Facility' (AMOF) by the Rolls Royce and Aviall, to the Mirage Rebuild Factory (MRF) of the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex.

The certification for the MRF is the first in the region.

Establishment of Overhaul facility

Basically the training and other and associated equipment was acquired from USA in 1969 to establish T56 engine overhaul facility. Complete building and other associated workshops were completed at PAF base Chaklala but facility could not be established. the Cleaning tanks manufactured by Local company were auctions.

In 1995 once again effort were made to launch the facility with the help of Singapore technologies but this proposal was turned back due to high cost. After the nuclear explosion overhaul facilities did not response to the requirement of overhauling of PAF T56 engines. A team of 2 Officers and 02 technicians were sent to Turkey for getting training on overhaul of T56 engine in 1998. On return of this team a comprehensive report was presented in which it was recommended that team is confident that this facility can be established at MRF PAF Kamra with minimum expenses.

A Part case was raised and after approval from Air Staff team was positioned at MRF Kamra on attachment to trail overhaul on T56 engine , which was already positioned at MRF. Additionally two more technicians were position at MRF to assist the team. First local overhaul engine was assembled and tested at Chaklala but on post run it revealed that it has developed few defect in its turbine section.Engine was sent back to kamra and it was learnt that 2nd stage space has rubbed with the vanes causing damage to turbine. During investigation it was revealed that damage was done due to lack of clearance in turbine which was not considered due to lack of training at Turkey because Turbine assembly was not accomplished during training but only theoretical training was imparted.

After US Sanction waiver Mr Larry O bank Rep of Rolls-Royce visited Pakistan and offered transfer of technology through AMOF in 2002-2003. After signing business agreement a team was sent to training at USA in 2003 on return team overhauled two engines under supervision of Rolls-Royce rep . Two engines were assembled tested and installed on C-130 aircraft. after 50 hrs of operation roll over ceremony was arranged on 13 January 2005.

T56 used for Power Production

There are number of countries using T56 engine,s industrial version 501KB 5 for production of electricity. This engine is very good and economical for production of electric power. One small 501KB5 Engine can produce approximately upto 4 MW and can be operated on gas, diesel and jet fuel or dual fuel. PAF has 31 Extra engines lying with them which can be utlized for conversion and power production to be positioned on every base. Fuel is drained daily from the aircraft wing tank to remove the water content which can be stored and used for production of power beside the use of gas.

This plant can be placed in tow able container and can be moved where ever required. 1st such power plant was purchased by Mari gas Company from M/S Centrax which is being installed and commission . On its successful operation it is expected that more such plants would be ordered by different organization. PAF is using T56 engine since long but this facility was not acquired whereas India is not using C-130 aircraft but they have overhaul facility for 501 KB5 Gas turbine and using no of plants in their country.

Installation and Commissiong of 501KB5 Gas Turbine In Pakistan

With great pleasure it is announced that 1st Rolls-Royce 501KB5 Gas turbine power plant of 3.98MW has been locally installed and commissioned at Mari gas Company field office Daharki District Ghotki Sind. The Gas Turbine was provide by M/S Centrax UK in 2007 and was lying because of non installation support by the UK company.

The installation and commissioning challenge was accepted by the Company NZ Technologies Rawalpindi established by me and with the help of one instrument Engineer Mr Jamil ud din from Karachi , was installed and commissioned. The Gas turbine has completed RTR of 128 Hrs and presently electrification is being carried out.

PAF has 29 Engines surplus to its requirement which can be converted and installed on all bases for uninterpreted power at bases by using these gas turbines.
