What is everybodys opinion on The Russian BTR-82 armoured personnel carrier? According to the designers it has much improved protection, mixed in with the same speed and reliability people have come to expect from the BTR family. If anybody has any other information regarding this vehicle i'd be glad to hear it. For instance does anybody know the cost or if it can survuve a direct hit from an RPG-7? Thank you for your time :)

It can not survive a direct hit from an RPG without cage armor.

It is a notable improvement over the BTR-80 and BTR-70M that it's replacing. It has a new combat module, with a stabilizer, and iirc better optics. It has slightly improved protection levels. I believe we have a good number of photos in our pictures section.

So no hope for the BTR-90 at all then?

Is money the main reaon Russia chose to go with the BTR-82 rather than the bTR-90?

The BTR-90 ended up complex, large, and still had inadequate protection levels.

They're developing a new medium-weight APC right now. The BTR-82 is a stop-gap measure, in response to MoD attacking the producers back in 2009. They sent a group of engineers to the troops in the former NCMD, and got info on what they considered the biggest drawbacks of the BTR-80, then attempted to rectify them on the BTR-82. Back in '09 the MoD complained about the BMP-3, BTR-80, T-90A, and BMD-4. The result was accelerating the BMP-3M development, corrections to the T-90AM, and BMD-4M, and the development of the BTR-82.
