Been looking for confirmation of this decommissioning. Almost a week later. Must be the stealth thing. LOL:

Navy's Last Spruance-class Destoyer Decommissioned
Story Number: NNS050927-06
Release Date: 9/27/2005 1:31:00 PM

By Journalist 3rd Class Cynthia Smith, Fleet Public Affairs Center Pacific

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- USS Cushing (DD 985), the last Spruance-class destroyer in service with the U.S. Navy, was decommissioned Sept. 21 on the 26th anniversary of the ship’s commissioning.

Speakers for the decommissioning ceremony included Cushing’s first commanding officer, retired Rear Adm. William C. Miller and Cushing’s current commanding officer, Cmdr. Steven A. Mucklow.

During the ship’s career, Cushing completed 10 deployments, four homeport changes and received multiple awards for excellence. The destroyer was also the last U.S. warship to transit the Panama Canal while under U.S. control, in September 1979.

“This ship caused the fleet to reset the standards of excellence. I am thankful that I was a part of this ship’s 26-year history,†said Miller. “It is the crew that makes the difference, and it should be the crew, not the hull or the steel, that should be treasured.â€

As Mucklow accepted the ship's commissioning pennant and was relieved as the ship's final commanding officer, he praised the crew.

“Sailors put the pride in the ship. Without them the past 26 years wouldn’t have happened,†said Mucklow. “We are now part of the legacy of all five ships to carry Cushing’s name, but I will always remember this crew with admiration and respect. It has been my honor to serve with them.â€

For Storekeeper 3rd Class (SW) Eric Browning, it will be his shipmates and friends he will miss most.

“I have been on board for three years, and the crew has become my family,†said Browning. “I have had some good times and some bad times on board, but in the end I will miss it all. I could not have asked for a better command.â€

Cushing is named in honor of Cmdr. William Barker Cushing, a Naval hero of the Civil War. Cushing led many small boat raids up the rivers of North Carolina, ending with the attack on and destruction of the Confederate ironclad CSS Albemarle in October 1864. During the battle, Cushing’s boat was swamped. His crew was either killed or captured, but Cushing eluded capture and was promoted and officially thanked by Congress.

It costs about $40 million to keep one spruance running. With the Turkish economy in bad shape, i dont they would want these white elephants without some American Assistance...but then again i could be wrong.

One hell of a beast though..

They're far from being "white elephants", IMV they're still more lethal at the ASW role than some ships in frontline service in other navies in the "top 10"

I think there was a book, Tiger Cruise, written about the USS Cushing.
It's an interesting book about pirates trying to capture the ship.
They're probably going to take off all the electronics AEW/Radar equipment including the SPY radar array and the VLS components. I'm pretty sure of it as why would the U.S. sell an decently advanced destroyer to other countries especially if their politcal ties aren't very strong.

Spruances dont have the SPY radar.

Turkey already uses the USN's EW arrays.

I doubt if the VLS will be removed.

A # of other countries use MK 41 VLS already. No problem there.

I dont see your point.

I think the main point is these kind of deals causes undevelopment on the countries which is trying to progress on defence technologies.
For example in 40's Turkey had its own tank factory, its own aircraft factory etc.. thanks to M. Kemal. After the marchall aids US offered our brainless politicians that they will give very cheap tanks, planes helos etc... so we had lost the capability of producing systems and lost the progress tech. now trying to buy some old tanks ( leo 2 a4 ) from germany...
What i mean that we need to progress our news slowly but with true mind. The best example is Onuk MRTP and MILGEM. No need such USS GOODS need to trust ourselves..
best regards...

Minor quibble. I would rate the Leo2 A4 as still in the top 3-4 tanks of the world. It is by no means an old tank in capability.

Personally speaking, I would have preferred the the Australian Govt had bought the German A4's (when we had the chance) over the Abrams. bang for buck they are extremely capable and are only matched by very few others.

Let me tell my point again. I would prefer much weak but national platforms instead of glorious M1A2's, Leopard 2 A 6 EX 's, Aegis's etc...
If you want to be the real player in the game, make money by exports, you should make your own platforms even they re not as well as the others.. but they re yours. and who knows someday you would be able to make the best one.

Building warships is extremely expensive.

Getting used warships from the US for free or very, very little is a very economical and efficient use of scarce resources.

Its veryyyyyyyy low risk.

Spare parts and techniccal expertise abound.

It also provides instant interoperability.

Even countries (Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, S. Korea, Japan to name a few) that build their own warships (btw Turkey has built MEKO frigates and type 209 submarines with German designs and assistance) are often equipped with any # of US designed and/or supplied systems.

Or you could get a liscence like China did for their planes. Instead of creating platforms from scratch they just reverse-engineered it and changed the names to the J- designation.
