Northrop Grumman Newport News Shipyard launched the second of the Virginia class SSN's last month. The keel for USS Texas (SSN-775) was laid on July 12, 2002, and the Navy will take posession sometime in 2006. The total requirement is for 30 boats, with production divided equally between Electric Boat and Newport News. The Virginia class is the sucessor to the Seawolf class, which was canceled after 3 subs.

Tugboats will later move the submarine to the shipyard's submarine pier for fitting out. Texas will have improved stealth capabilities, sophisticated surveillance capabilities, and Special Warfare enhancements that will enable it to meet the Navy's multi-mission requirements.
