Why is the fourth dude carrying a hand held cannon?? These things don't do anybody good in CQB.
It also can be used as a tear gas, or flash bang/stun grenade launcher.

Trust me GF, tear gas and flashbangs will not have much effect in an intense CQB engagement. I feel much more comfortable knowing I have an automatic weapon in my hands instead of a shot-reload-shot hand cannon. You might say the can be used to launch grenades, but most grenades fired from such a cannon won't arm itself unless it has travel more than 15 meters. And when clearing a room, you'll do better with your bare hands than using such a weapon.

But we are not sure of what the image is meant to portray - if it's a hostage situation and it hasn't gone hot, then the doctrine is to get the hostages first.

If it's pure CQB then yes you are right, but they could also have called up a clearing round for an entrenched area.

The pic says a lot, but it's unaccompanied. Hence the pic could be an image of anything.;

Nobody I know uses a can gun for normal CQB, but it has its uses. (Aussie Digger can give greater clarity on this)

It's a photo-op shot though. (look at the shot, it's a gallery of weapons used - not necessarily a reflection of how they do a breach)

From the way these guys are equipped, it surely can't be a hostage situation.
First the team isn't wearing ballistic protection, which is vital to any CT operation. During CQB, your chance of getting your ass poped by a bullet is very high. Without protection the chance of surving after taking hits is slimer than slim.
Second their weapons doesn't look like it's for hostage rescue. I see MP-5s, M-60s, hand cannon, and G-3. If they are doing CT training i don't see the need for M-60s or G-3(too long). But it doesn't look like they are doing normal MOUT exercise as well, MP-5s is simply useless beyond 100 meters. So i don't know what in the world they are training for.

Cannon does have it's uses, like firing CS grenades into windows and doors, but just doesn't make sense in this photo. Maybe it's one of those demonstrations pic to impress the clueless general public. :D:
