April 09, 2005 17:16 PM Govt To Investigate Mystery Ship At Port Klang
LANGKAWI, April 9 (Bernama) -- The government will conduct further investigation on the ship, "Glenn Brave Heart", berthed near the Klang Port wharf to ensure that the country's security is not compromised, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Saturday.
The deputy prime minister said the investigation would focus on the activities of the ship and its crew who were believed to have been in Malaysian waters since last July.
"As far as I know, the ship had obtained permission from the authorities to berth in the waters," he told a news conference after handing over the keys to 27 permanent houses to the tsunami victims in Taman Batu Ara, Kuala Triang, here.
He was asked to comment on reports on the presence of the ship, which had berthed about 500m from the North Port, Klang Port, since last July.
The port staff claimed there were suspicious activities on board the ship every morning involving about 25 military personnel in commando outfits and armed with M-16 rifles.
Najib, who is also defence minister, said he understood that the ship was mapping the area but the government would further investigate its activities.
"We must ensure that the country's security is not compromised. We are waiting for further reports," he said.

It's a contracted defence Logistics Support Vessel - and the Govt actually does know about it as they provide permission for it to act in national waters.

The national press is not being entirely honest when they portray seeming ignorance about its role.

As a logistics vessel it is more or less a USNS type classification - NOT a USS designator.

Foreign ship sparks doubts

LANGKAWI: The Government is not aware of any “military activity†on board a foreign ship, Glenn Brave Heart, which is docked some 500m from the North Port in Port Klang.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said he was not aware of any marching drill or commando-style exercise on the ship.

He said the ship was given permission to carry out a mapping survey but that he did not know who commissioned the survey.

“We will investigate to ascertain if activities that could undermine national security were carried out,†he said after handing over house keys to 17 tsunami victims in Kuala Teriang here yesterday.

Najib was commenting on a report in Utusan Malaysia that highlighted the presence of the ship since July last year.

Some 25 personnel dressed in brown military uniform and carrying M16 rifles were spotted marching on board.

Meanwhile, the company which owns Glenn Brave Heart clarified that the M-16 rifles onboard were not real firearms, a claim supported by Federal Marine Police Commander Senior Asst Comm II Abdul Rahman Ahmad.

SAC Abdul Rahman said in Kuala Lumpur yesterday that Glenn Defense Marine Sdn Bhd had obtained a permit from the port authorities to shoot a commercial on the ship on April 2.

“Fake M16s and commando uniforms were used,†he said.

SAC Abdul Rahman said the ship which has a crew of 46 – 25 Nepalese, 10 Myanmars, 10 Filipinos and a Bruneian – arrived in Port Klang on March 2.

Glenn Defense Marine general manager Carmen Edmonds said yesterday that Glenn Brave Heart was a defence logistics vessel of the company which provides the service of laying the security parameters for visiting warships.

Edmonds, who claimed she once served as a Lieutenant-Commander in the Royal Malaysian Navy, said security drills were routinely held as the vessel carried expensive high-tech equipment such as scanners and explosive detectors.

“This is also to ensure the crew have adequate preparation in dealing with any untoward incident as the ship often sails into the international waters of Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore,†she said, adding that the crew were Glenn Defense Marine staff and not military personnel.

Edmonds said the “L 1946†inscription on the ship's hull was its registration number and not a number used by warships.

“Warships use the registration code of their country. For example, Malaysia uses 'KD', Singapore uses 'RSS' while the Americans use 'USS',†she said.
