Manas Air Base routes to Afghanistan?

When I looked at the map of Kyrgyzstan...

Tajikistan is sandwiched between Afghanistan & Kyrgyzstan..

I'm wondering why the US did not choose Tajikistan to set up a base.

Also I read the news that Tajikistan airspace will be open for US planes on non-military supplies to Afghanistan..

My question is.. from Manas Air Base to Afghanistan...what air space do they use? Im sure it is not Tajikistan.. could be Uzbekistan?

The US is negotiating with Uzbekistan at the moment for basing rights.

Russia has also hinted at greater cooperation over the Afghan mission. Though on our part it's simply an attempt to get influence over NATO operations in the region, rather then a genuine gesture of friendship. Especially considering that it's the CSTO that wants US bases out of the CAR.

Probably politics; the Tajiks and Uzbeks may have been more pro-Moscow. However, the difference isn't all that much (800km tops) for air freight. Most of things are centered around the Gulf hubs anyway. Planes go there then onto A'stan.

NATO may have to buy fuel from Russian refineries. Can't really transport bulk fuel by air.

I think Russia wants to squeeze NATO bases out from there, until they have to depend largely on Russia. So keeping Russia pleased will be a priority for NATO.

Some serious human rights issues in Uzbekistan. NATO are sensitive to being associated with such issues.
