M240B Rails

I'm looking for a flat (non-sloped) MIL-STD 1913 accessory rails that can bolt onto a US M240B. I am not looking for a riser. I am looking for one that can mount under the heat shield, so the factory bipod can be replaced by a Grip-pod (or any forend grip). Also, I think you can, but does any one know for sure if the factory bipod can be removed and the rifle still maintain 100% functionality?

The vehicle mounted variants don't have a bipod yet look to have an identical barrel/gas regulator setup. From my memories of the MAG-58, there's no technical reason I am aware of why the bipod couldn't be removed and the weapon operate perfectly normally (assuming it could be aimed of course...)

As to the Grip-pod, a Picatinny rail (or 2) would have to be fitted under the gas regulator (and perhaps remove the heat shield) as specwarries do with M249/Minimi's. This would need the removal of the bipod to accomplish, I presume? Such a handle would be a piece of cake to install if a Picatinny rail could be fitted and there are handles around that have their own little bipods stored within the handle...

A quick search on Google revealed that the US does indeed have an M240B "forward rail mounting system" program, presumably to address the same concerns as you have. Couldn't find a picture, but it'd be virtually identical to that of the M249 I'd reckon...

Of course, I totally forgot about the vehicle variants!

Our M240Bs have the forward rail mounting system. It includes two rails on the side, plus one on the feed tray cover. However, since the Bs are set up to be used with the factory bipod, there is no rail on the bottom. I contacted Mounting Solutions Plus, and they manufacture a small, plastic rail that they guarentee to mount onto any heat shield. I can't wait to try one out.
