Lockheed offers to upgrade F-16s, give C-130s

ISLAMABAD: Lockheed Martin (LM) will help upgrade the existing fleet of F-16 and provide C-130 aircrafts and radar installations to the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) after fulfilling the legal and procedural requirements.

General (r) James L Jamerson, president of LM corporate business development in the Middle East and Africa, said this during a meeting with Minister for Defence Rao Sikandar Iqbal on Thursday. The minister told the LM official that the PAF had sent a letter of request to the United States government demanding additional F-16 aircrafts. He urged Mr Jamerson to support the move. Online

Now this gives a great deal of support to the story that PAF's F-16s would all get MLUs and the fleet refurbished to at least its original strength of 40. :smokingc:

No point in blowin money on a useless upgrade. Were retiring those oldies in 2012 anyway. maybe earlier.

Block 60 would be too pricey considering LM has a clear monopoly in this market for F-16 upgrades, they would whip PAF for every penny if PAF goes for the Block 60 standard, but Block 60 would be worth it.

Intead of going for upgrade Pakistan should try to buy new ones, from fourth generation. If American GOV. not willing to sell than buy some other ACs.

Sometimes the news are released way ahead of reality, like the Swedish Grippen aircrafts episode. :?

the pakistani media does have the tendency of jumping the Gun but clever People here can read between the lines. its not important what the Media says. everyone knows that this upgrade was long time coming. C-130 deal is already being completed TPS radar systems are being installed. the First C-130 has entered LM overhaul facility. the F-16 upgrade has to be approved by Lockheed martin there is political clearance. the prices of the chosen components would have to be established and agreed onn . the Location of the Upgrade and overhaul has to be determined too. the time scale of the process, teams that would supervise the process. there salaries and there security. this is what is going to be in the Legal contract. A contract has to be signed. its a very complex issue. those birds are PAF main front line defense they can't be shipped out of the country. 8 of the F-16 would have to be either shipped inn or the Cannibalized F-16 would have to shipped out to LM to be rebuilt (i doudt they would be able to rebuild it at Karma).

pakistan should just get the C-130 and forget upgrading the f-16s as this would be to costy. we should get new ones or forget it. there is point in upgrading the current f-16s as corsair said that they would be retired soon. if this is true then the C-130 are the main deal.

its called mid life Upgrade should involve upgrading the enitre Airframe to current new standards removing and rebuilding each and everything part of the AC. its would essentially be a newer AC with enhanced capability and would be very up to date i would say it would certainly have another 20-25 years of Life remaining after the process. the Cost of Upgrade would be minimal for the capability it would provide to PAF. PAf has invested Billions on developing Logistics and training. i doubt PAF would now retire the Airframe in 2012. this 2012 date was set when MLU's were not available. i think GF would know more about the MLU process.

I would love to see some conformal fuel tanks, but Conformals do add Weight on the Top of the airframe, i don't know why but that seams to make the AC less agile or something (top loading)

CFT's do impose a drg penalty but more than make up for it with enhanced range, combat persistence etc. This is becoming more and more important with the emphasis shifting away from WVR to BVR air to air combat. Who cares about agility when you need to fight aircraft 50+ klms away? No jet can out manuevre a modern air to air missile...

My military contacts may be week but my Political contacts just started to seem quite good. This is all true I believe. My family has had links with politics even before the creation of Pakistan. Other day asked some one in Civil Service about whats being done for the PAF? he just gave an answer on the spot but It seemed like he was makin it up like civil servents always do just to cover up things or make them selves look good. He said defence ministry has confermed Lockheed-Martins interest to upgrade PAF F-16s & also said that PAF has asked for more F-16s of the same vairiant. On the other hand Lockheed has said that 3 of PAF F-16s are not there concern as they were bought from General Dynamics directly not Lockheed Martin.
I told this news to Webmaster the other day and he just like all of us said PAF shouldnt buy F-16s.

Anyways I just cant believe civil servents can just give away news like this, shocking. It seems he was right. I will go back n ask him more questions about this C-130.

HAck I should even ask him abt Gripens. Defence Sctrat. is full of big open mouths I think.

Sabre, no one here has a problem with the PAF flying F-16s. What we do have a problem is, is america switching off the spares pipeline for our main offensive air fleet just like it can do with all our armed gunships (Ah-1) and the back bone of our transport fleet (C-130s). Keeping this in mind there is no point in upgrading our fleet agn and agn and agn to get the same result : limited amount of operation service in wartime. And whats the point of these babies if they wont be able to fly for long in war time?
