Lighting configuration, C5 ?

My son and I were attending a night time baseball game in Wappinger, NY. During the game there was an aircraft which overflew the ball field. It was low and 'lumbering' along. I found that there is a fleet of C5 aircraft at Stewart Airport about 10 miles to the SW, which is the direction the aircraft was headed. We were not able to actually see the aircraft due to the darkness.

My question is, as the aircraft approached, low intensity lights appeared in the center of the craft. They came into view as it was directly overhead. The configuration was this:

o o

o o

o

with the top toward the front of the craft.

Would these lights be floodlights visible with the 'gear down' only ?

Was this a C5 ?

Also, what might the altitude of the aircraft have been at 9.7 miles assuming a straght-in approach ?

thanks, jack
