Layered Air Defence

I need to learn about Layered Air Defence and am looking for sources of information. Specifically defending land based assets from airborne attack by fixed or rotary wing platforms. In particular, I am interested in which current / "in service" Surface to Air Missile systems SA17? SA19? etc others believe to pose the greatest threat to either fixed or rotary wing platforms

Thanks:)

Currently the greatest threat is from the SA-X-21. It has the longest engagement range of any SAM. It is believed to be able to target stealth aircraft. Whatever it's true capabilities it is by far the most advanced SAM Russia has developed to date.

I happen to be interested in this so didn't see a point in creading a new thread.

I'm curious...have the Russians sold this to anyone?

From Wikipedia
"The S-400 is also targeting the export market, with China reportedly already having spent $500 million on it. Russia has also offered the system to the United Arab Emirates and Greece. Perhaps the biggest impact for in particular the United States is nations like Iran expressing interest in the system.
18 divisions (8 - 12 launchers each) of S-400 are planned for purchase to 2015 "

It seems to me it will take a 'few' years for Russia to complete production of 144 launchers and their associated systems (radar, support, tracking, etc.)

What did the Chinese spend their money on?!

In any case, to me layered means integrated theatre AD structure, not a single type....right?

Interesting to note that the Russians are using a modified 96L6E for their SA-X-21, indicating the missile itself was finished before the new radar. That is the reason I doubt the Russian claim that the system currently is able to detect targets with low signature at extended ranges.

I'm not aware that China has any role in the development of SA-X-21 nor have plans to purchase it. Mostly it's rumours flowing around without anything substantial. With that said, future purchase is not out of the equation.
