A 1.8 billion dollar contract to the Admiralty shipyards for 6 Project 636 Kilo subs, ordered by Vietnam.

Apparently the deal with Venezuela fell through (according to the article) but instead Vietnam picked up the order.

I'm not up to date on the Vietnamese Navy, how significant of a submarine addition would this be?

Feanor..do you have info who's the six submarines will be for besides Vietnam..?? I don't think all 6 will be for Vietnam. From other forum Venezualla still mentioned, but the others is for Algier and Indonesia.

In here we also not really sure if we still go ahead with Kilo's..the signal still conflicting only say that the decisiion will be put in June. It could be Russian ones..but German 214 also mentioned..
Sources in here say we want Amur due it's newer design and can potentially matched 214. However other source still say 2 kilo's still included within USD 1 bio deal with russia. That sources say since we want 8 subs..than the deal will be 2 exsisting 209, 2 Kilo's..and 4 new build (still being decide wheather going to be Amur or 214)...but again the Kilo's still increasingly in dark

I'm not surprises Vietnam will buy submarines..and with their experience mostly with russian equipments..then russian subs is reasonable choices. Until the arrival of Singaporean subs..South East Asia for few dacades only known Indonesian subs (first the Whiskey and later 209)..offcourse the Thais used to have subs back in the 40's..
Thus with SIngaporean has them, Malaysian also, we set to increased our subs fleet, Thais probably will soon (after they can decide their political squable)..then it's reasonable Vietnam also want ones..

That's I believe that set Australian to have a dozen subs...increasing under water arsenal in SEA and off course increasing sophistications of Chinese and Indian subs..means the under water environment in Asia soon will become more interesting..

Oops I reposted it in the Vietnam's Armed Forces thread...

VPN has currently no submarines

Vietnam has two disputes: Paracel Islands (only with the PRC)
Spratley Islands (PRC,ROC,RP,Malaysia)

China is setting up a large naval base (inlcuding submarines) on the Southern coast of Hainan.

New offshore oil rigs/field have to be protected. (Oil industry deliveres 25-30% of state renevues.)

I am not an expert, but how does the Improved Kilo performs compared to newer designs, like Lada, U214?

Beat me by minutes cruncy..
I just also found English articles on that http://en.rian.ru/russia/20090427/121320414.html

Seems that's confirm that the posible deal on Kilos' with Venezualla, Algiers, and Indonesia is in the dark..
The info in here seems indicated we still want Russian subs..but not Kilo's anymore..
The deal being talked now is for Amur with rival comes from 214..
Sources in here say's that Amur is the russian design that can match 214 or Scorpenes..in the area of Automation, sensors, and AIP..

http://www.ckb-rubin.ru/eng/project/submarine/noatompl/index.htm
Also this site from Rubin indicated that Amur is much modern than kilo's..

My article claimed that all 6 were for Vietnam. Two Kilo's already being built for Algiers, with a run of 6 more for Vietnam. Nothing about the Amur. I'll look for more info.
