Asia’s most advanced naval base and India’s first shiplift system will become operational next week in Karwar on the Arabian Sea coast and is claimed to be less vulnerable to Pakistani missile and fighter attacks. A natural harbour on the country’s west coast, Karwar has been exploited by the Navy to plan a 11,200 acre mega base and the first phase of the “project seabirdâ€, completed at a cost of over Rs 2,500 crore will be inaugurated by defence minister Pranab Mukurjee next week. With the base becoming operational, Navy will move some of its most lethal warships to the new base.

Defence Minister to inaugurate Asia’s most advanced naval base Karwar (Karnataka), May 31: Asia's most advanced naval base and India's first ship-lift system will be dedicated to the nation today at this Arabian sea coast fulfilling the Indian Navy's dream of having a base that is safe from possible Pakistani missile and fighter attacks.

Located in the centre of the western seaboard in Karnataka amidst breathtaking crescent-shaped beaches where the Western Ghat hill ranges touch the sea, Karwar will house some of the navy's most potent weapons - destroyers, stealth frigates and possibly even the soon-to-be acquired Scorpene submarines.

A natural harbour, Karwar has been developed by the navy at a cost of more than Rs 2,500 crore to have an 11,200 acre mega base and with its inauguration by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, the first phase of "Project Seabird" will be completed. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi will also grace the function.

"This naval base is less vulnerable from Pakistani attacks if you compare it with Mumbai," Admiral Arun Prakash told reporters.

The base is about 900 nautical miles (nm) away from Karachi and over 1500 nm from new Pakistan bases coming up at Gwadar and Ormara, unlike Mumbai which is only 580 nm away. Its easy connectivity to Goa and Mumbai were other critical components in the 1980s planning process.

"This is the only harbour which will be exclusively used by the navy," Admiral Prakash said.

karwar base will ultimately be able to berth 50 warships and will also have a shipyard for manufacturing ships and also a ship repair facility it has been named as the ins kadamba, the berthing capabilities of other indian naval facilities are mumbai(50 ships and submarines and also has ship repair and construction facility),vishakapatinam(50 ships and submarines and has ship repair and construction facilities),the third naval base is kochi where the new indian aircraft carrier is being constructed, the navy has naval enclaves at dabolim in goa, kolkatta and fortran(fortress andaman and nicobar) however other than kadamba no other naval base can directly accomodate the new gorshkov class of aircraft carrier.:coffee

India opens huge new naval base

India has opened a new naval base on its Arabian Sea coast which it says will become one of the largest in Asia.

The base at Karwar in south-western Karnataka state will have space for 42 warships and deep water for an aircraft carrier and nuclear submarines to dock.

It fulfils a long-standing demand by India's navy for an exclusive facility.

Until now Indian naval bases have had to share space with commercial ports, leaving them congested and vulnerable to attacks.

The BBC's Sunil Raman in Bangalore says the INS Kadamba base covers 4,400 acres and will become the biggest operational base in India.

Delays

"This base is of strategic importance," Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said at the new base in Karwar.

"With the commissioning of this base, the navy will fulfil the responsibility of defending the country and safeguarding its exclusive economic zone."

The base has been commissioned 19 years after its foundation stone was laid, mainly because of delays due to funding problems.

But in 2000, the Indian government decided to make it a priority and channelled huge funds towards the project.

Presently, the base can berth around 11 ships but the number will rise to 42 in the next couple of years.
A ship-lifting system built by European engine maker Rolls Royce at a cost of $35m will become operational by the end of this year.

Aaaditya, Corrections: 42 ships max. intended, not 50!

Kashifshahzad: Relax, Pakistan doesn't need more naval bases (perhaps maybe just 1 or 2 in the most desparate of situations but certainly not at the moment).

Pakistan has a quite small coastal area as compared to India, so building up more naval bases without keeping in line with the PN strategy of action, it would just be a waste of limited resources and wouldn't result in anything constructive vis a vis the IN.

India needs more bases than Pakistan cuz of its operational requirements to bring its coastal areas under the umbrella of protection. One thing that you could say is that PN could modernize its already existing naval bases to pack a more solid punch, especially the newer ones. :coffee

karwar is the only pure naval base of the indian navy rest all are commercial bases where indian navy berths its warships(hence they are vulnerable):coffee

I think its was planned even before gwadar project was started.

I am surprised to know it is largest naval base??
Does China or Japan doesn't posses bigger bases.

Its obvious that gorshy's home will the karwar but what about the ADS.

if karwar can accomodate the gorshky then it can also accomodate the ads(ads is lighter than gorshky),by the way there is an article on www.indiadefence.com(excellent article on karwar naval base with pictures) which mentions that karwar will be the home of both gorshky and the ads.:coffee

The PN already has sufficient major naval bases at Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara and Karachi. What we really need now is to upgrade the former three to make them more than just dispersal points so in case the fleet is cut off it might as well put up a fight with some support infrastructure at its back.

And speaking of dispersal points, were going to need more of those if were going to go in for more Missile FACs and Patrol Boats. The DPRK is an example here which has built several dispersals both offshore and in coastal and river areas. These would protect the FACs from just becoming sitting ducks. The pakistani coastline isnt too small. We could have a dozen of these scattered at wide intervals as well as the major ports. This would however require that the PN acquire medium helicopters for logistical duties in order to run these bases.
