Joining the military

Hello,
I am about to finish high school very soon and contemplating joining the Australian Defence Force. However I am considering joining another country's Defence Force. Is this possible? Any nations out there that are willing to take foreigners? I have a clean history and have done pretty well at school and in the sporting field.

Furthermore what do people think of the RAAF Airfield Defence Guards?

Many thanks

Duck.

Well for one I would ask why you'd be interested in another nations military, instead of Australias. But on that note, I myself was going to join the French Foreign legion. After watching a few documentaries on it, I was very turned off. The way I heard it, the career prospects are 20+ years before you can become a WO. And don't even think of seeing a map or compass until you're a corporal. It's not the kind of thing i'd be up for.

On the other hand, I'm guessing if you dont want to fight for Australia, you want to fight for a country that has a more powerful military. The USA is happily taking foreigners I believe (since Americans damn well don't wanna join up.) It should only take a simple Google search and a bit of foraging, if you're genuinely interested.

And what's the sudden craze with ADGies? Before you ask, NO! They are not special ops! They're regular infantry who fill a niche in the military organisation.

The only thing that would make ADGies special, is the fact that they're probably going to be fighting against special forces. That, and I believe they have slightly higher physical fitness levels than other infantry. (Someone want to confirm/deny this?) And they also get a different range of weaponry, including emphasis on pistols.

I love Australia and what we stand for but I'm joining for experience as I am contemplating to apply for the AFP after my service.

I've looked at America and apparently you have to obtain a "green card" which is quite difficult.

That is precisely why I want to be an ADGie :)
Slightly high physical fitness levels and more emphasis on pistols. Both are what the AFP are seeking for.

Thanks for the reply :)

duckey why would you want to join another country's armed forces?
And if you do then the best advice is to call and ask , they will tell you everything precisely what you need , in most country's you will need to speak the language , allthough if you plan to join US then you already know english.

Fighting against special forces? Maybe...

I wouldn't believe the "fitness" thing too much. Some of the fittest people I've ever seen in my life have been infantry personnel.

Did you know that in the most recent Duke of Gloucester mil-skills competition the winning section was from 2RAR, beating even a section from 4RAR and like most mil-skill comps, physical fitness was a large component of the course...

More myths about ADGIES. Nothing more. I hesitate to even call them infantry, because they aren't trained in and don't perform the full range of infantry tasks.

They operate the standard range of infantry weapons. On top of that they carry MP5's, allegedy because of the "penetration" issues of firing near parked aircraft, though if a 9mm round hit an F/A-18, I don't think the consequences would be so much worse than if 5.56mm hit it.

Whilst they may carry pistols on occasion, I doubt they do it any more than normal infantry do, which is bugger all, unless performing CPP tasks or some such, and that's yet ANOTHER role, ADGIES don't perform...

You can of course as a member of the Commonwealth join the United Kingdom's armed forces, plenty of roles you can do there that you can't do here.

Its relatively easy to get a work visa which will allow you to join the armed forces and will give you eligibility for British Citizenship.

Hi Duckey, why the interest in airfield defence?
Just my 2 cents worth - I don't think it will be "interesting" compared to other services. During my service days, I was initially in infantry before being posted to air defence and I must say that air defence is much more interesting in that it requires a lot more "brain power".
Not trying to offend anyone here who has served in infantry before but as a vocation, it gets boring very fast. Since airfield defence is another form of infantry, just without the long marches, I would definitely not recommend it as a career.
Why not try air defence? I did some joint exercises with Aussie troops a few years back and i was very impressed by them. :)
