Joining the Army

I'am Currently trying to join the army, I have been looking around on the web for some information / tips / help.

At the moment i just completed my assement day - I'm going to tell you what i have done so far and maybe give you some insight on what goes on so you arnt so nervous.

I started off by applying online, the website is https://myhq.defencejobs.gov.au, create an account and fill out all the information, Select your job prefences and ect, After your done, make sure you have completed it all, because they wont contact you till its all done, there is a checklist.

Once that is complete you should receive a phone call from a Recruitment officer, and he should talk to you and set up a day where you go in for your JOES day.

1 Month later ( I think it varies on how long you wait, could be shorter or longer , this was my personal experience) - The JOES day started at 7.45, I just wore normal clothing as you dont really have an interveiw with any officers so your normal clothes are fine just look neet and tidy.
If you want to leave earily, try and get there first, the quicker you sign in, youll be on top of the list ( thats how it went in townsville anyway ), i thought id be polite and wait last to sign in - i was last to leave too.
Your joes day will be with plenty of other people, everyone will be nervous but its not that big of deal, fairly easy day just need to relax.

Once everyone is signed in , an officer will take you upstairs ( townsville) not sure where else in other places, and youll be introduced around the place, Youll have a quick chat with some people as a group not indivdiual and then youll take a aptiutde test, I was worried i was going to fail the test, but don't worry, it really isnt that hard, work through it quickly if u dont finish thats ok it dosnt hurt you at all, just try and get as many as you can right.
Dont try and finish ahead of the timer use all your time effienctly, theres no prize for 1st place finshers , cause it dosnt matter anyway u have to wait for everyone. Once your done you'll go back to the waiting room and ussually another officer talks and asks you what you want to do ect, this part is prolly the longest wait if u chcked in last.

The next part you get your interveiw with a recruitment officer of somekind, and he'll go over everything with you, these guys are ussually pretty nice and you can be honest and upfront if your unsure tell them, also tell them whatd you like to do, he'll give you a sheet of the list of jobs u can do dependant on your test.

Once this is done he'll tell you u need all these documents, if you want to speed your process up, bring them with you on your joes date, i think they are ;
Medicare card
Drivers license
All school reports ( ussually only need year 9 or 10, but bring em all)
Birth Certifcate
Passport if u have one.
And that should be it i belive.

Then you can leave.

Once you hand all the documents in, youll get sent out a Assement date.

You need to start studying for your assement day, i cant stress this enough, i was stupid enough to be reading the wrong information and a week out from my assement day i was told where to get my information from.

You need to go to this site. : *** IMPORTANT ***
http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/army/ << For army
http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/airforce/ << Air Force
http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/navy/ << Navy.

Go into the jobs link and select your job that your going to be doing, All the information is in there, read it learn it.

90% of the information you'll need for your assement day is on that webpage.
The other 10% is on the docuements your last interveiw on JOES day will give you.

Week out from your assement day you'll receive a call from a recruitment officer and he'll ask you a range of questions, hopefully by then youll know them all and u can answer them with ease, if u can answer them all your in a great position, Unlike me i couldnt answer any of them because i was reading the wrong information!, But he told me the answers and where i should get my info from >> The Website links ect.

Make sure you know everything about your job, Training, Wages, Service Allowence, ADF Policys, Where you can get posted, Lifestyle, what weapons you'll use ect.. Put it this way, if your serious about joining, if u learn all this, you'll get in. end of story.

On your assement day, Make sure your dressed nicly, boys : Business shirt, black pants black shoes, Present yourself, Dont go in normal clothes, your interveiw will comment on what you wear, so look the best. Girls : i don't know what girls where so just look beatuiful i guess lol.

You do not need a resume of any kind, Realistcly you don't need anything maybe a book to kill some time , light snack for lunch ect.

Tip : Spray some deodrant, i forgot cause i was in a hurry and i sweated all day long < lame.

Youll rock up looking great, feeling great and you check in where you checked into your JOES day, youll be asked to go upstairs to the waiting room where u waited last time.

Let the Lady/ Guy know your there the recruitment co'ordinator.

I stared off with Physc. He gives you a question sheet with yes or no answers, he will say there is no right or wrong answers, but with some of the questionns, i was able to pick up if i put down yes for soreness of muscles all the time or i get tired heaps youll get rejected, you can lie on this sheet. He just asks you questions about your life, why you want to join, postives negatives, Where you go for training, what will be the hardest part. Guys if you need to lie and don't want to tell them something make sure your a good lier, they ussually pick up when your lying but i was able to get away with some stuff. Its just a big chat too see if u arnt crazy really.

Next i did a medical, The nurse will get you to read an eye chart, Turns out i couldnt read the stupid chart so i gotta get a eye test.

Piss in a cup, girls im not sure what u do.

Then you get your height, weighte ect done.

And a hearing test. Make sure u understand clearly what to do on the hearing test as the first time i did it i failed by 100% and i was supposed to hear nothing lol. But she let me do it again and i passed 100% because she explained in detail how to do it, its not hard click a button every third beep.

Once thats all done youll see a doctor, he'll examine you, blood pressure, you get naked lie on bed, he checks you over, makes you do push ups, sit ups, checks all joints, eyes ect. He also Checks your Balls and Pen*s - just to make sure theres nothing wrong, First time a guy has ever played with my balls hahahaha - Bit weird but hes a doctor i guess.

After all that he will do a report and tell you what Class you are, I was a Class 3 , i just need an eye test and ill be class 1 which is medically fit for duty.

If you get a class 4, you will be turned away immeditatly.

Class 3 requires you to do something of a testing ect.

Class 2 - not sure sorry.

Class 1- Med Fit.

--------------------

Ussually by now the days half gone.

More waiting and then an interveiw.

I was lucky enough to get a really nice guy, down to earth so that went my way.

He asked me questions about what weapons i use, how much ill get paid, wheres employment training, whats service allowence, the military lifestyle, Drug policy ect. If you read your information youll do fine if u go in and he asks what weapons do you use and you reply " a rifle" or he asks what does a rifleman do..and you reply" Runs around in the bush". Youll get rejected, so know your shi*.

I was accepted very quickly and just require and eye test. Once i get that done and know what happens ill post more.

i hope this helps some nervous people unsure on how it goes down.

cheers.

moonie.

Enlisting in the ARMY

Hey guys, currently in the process of applying for the recently released ADF GAP Year program. I have always been interested in joining the Army for the physical and mental challenges as well as hopefully meeting some top blokes.
The gap year for me is to make sure I am choosing a job in the army that suits me best.
I applied in March 2008 and let me tell you, getting through the recruitment process is a real put off. How did you guys think about the recruitment process?
I am very aware of the struggle to get the right numbers for our defense, surely making the enlistment process less painful will help improve numbers.
I am an army addict and have been for a while now.
I would just like your opinions on what fields you have gone into doing, and some of the best and worst things I will experience as a Rifleman. I am also seriously looking into joining the SF possibly as commando for a few years before I attempt my dream goal of working in the Australian SASR. I know its a big call, give me your thoughts....thanks

Rifleman for the GAP year in 2009
Hoping to apply for Commando once I hit 19 in 2010
Concentrate on joining Army and becoming a qualified rifleman first. The Gap Year doesn't provide that and you won't be allowed to undertake SFET straight from your gap year.

By all means, focus on a job as a Commando as your short term career goal, but do it by becoming an ARA member first, otherwise you'll have simply wasted a year first.

You'll finish your gap year, then have to sign up as an ARA member and do the proper Infantry IET anyway. Why not simply get it out of the way? It's not THAT tough. Even if you HATE the Army, you can be out by 22.

Is 4 years guaranteed employment really THAT bad? Particularly as you'll get at least ONE operational deployment (and most likely more than one if you're an infantryman) in that time in the current climate.

Thanks for the advice, so the GAP YEAR won't qualify me even though I undergo Kapooka training and Rifleman training at Singleton? I was under the impression we would do the same training in those areas.

Sorry i havnt replied latly, not alot happening.

So after wasting 3 weeks of getting a eye test and it getting sent to brisbane to get reveiwed it came back good and i wasnt even asked to get glasses.

I was told an enlistment date Jan/Feb and wasnt given a physical date.

2 Days later got a phone call saying Physical is on 25/8/08, Which was yesterday, the physical is probably the most easiest test youll ever do, i was surprised in how easy it went. 15 Push ups nice and quick, 45 sit ups was at a slow but steady pace if u practiced you shouldnt have a problem, i didnt even feel any pain in my abs/lower back or legs compared to when i first started training for it. And the Shuttle Run, Our group practically started sprinting from 7 onwards as a joke, this is how easy it is.

Altho it was easy for me as i have trained for it for awhile, others might find it a bit hard, do it seriously as you dont want to fail.

Ive been made aware i have a enlistment date and package in the mail, which is for 17th november 2008 and was also told you get a 2 week break over christmas.

I cant remeber exactly when i applied to go in for a YoU's day but by the time i leave i think itll be around 5-7 months?.. Kinda a long drowling wait.

All things done :) only blood test to go.

hope this post has helped the nerves off some.

Sweet, thanks for the information, I can't wait i got my enlistment papers a while ago but because I don't go in till Feburay next year my physcial isn't for a while.
So could you give me a rough idea of how fit yourself and many of the boys there are? I just want to know what level I am on, and if i should up my training.
Thanks

Well to be honest i havnt been training very hard at all, i got glandulla fever after my yous day then i had a fever and cough after my assement day and i had a flu when i did my physical test, download the beep test, if u can do that your sweet, do like 20 push ups x 5 a night every second night and do as many sit ups as you can but dont hurt yourself.
