RED CHINA LAUNCHES FIRST HOMEMADE AEGIS DESTROYER
AFPC China Reform Monitor ^ | July 21, 2003 | Al Santoli, ed.

Communist China's first locally produced "Aegis" Destroyer was launched in Shanghai, the Hong Kong Tai Yang Bao reports. The warship is designed to be equipped with an advanced radar system, stealth design, a vertical launch system, and long-range anti-aircraft missiles to fill in for the Red Chinese Navy's gaps in launching seaborne long- and medium-range antiaircraft attacks. It is expected that the destroyer will be officially integrated into the South Sea Fleet three to five years from now. The development of the destroyer indicates that Communist China has made far reaching progress in shipbuilding technology over the past 20 years, as the Red Chinese Navy is moving towards the stage of building itself into a blue water oceanic fleet. The homemade "Aegis" destroyers may not be operational before 2005 because verification of the destroyers' current computer integrated technology capability - specifically the ability to process a huge amount of signals needed to meet the needs of the phased-array radar systems - has yet to be completed.
Is it true? is this article is really what it is and not just some propaganda?

Yes 171 was launched a few weeks back, but I found it amusing that the article use words like communist China and Red Chinese navy as if people don't already know China is a communist state.

another example of name calling and label sticking. Guessing people are used to this by now.

however one of 171's major drawbacks is its lack of medium/short range surface-air missle system. It will only be able to rely on its twin type 730, similar to european "goalkeeper", for close-range defense.

Actually my irritation is the fact that they call it an "Aegis" type system when it is not. It's a phased array system.

is Aegis 052C destroyer or something?

i dont know
No, it uses a phased array system - it's not an Aegis type system at all. It's typical journalistic indolence as they wouldn't know an aircraft carrier from a fishing trawler. ;)

I still see journo's referring to "frigates" as "battleships", absolute morons!

:lolol

well..i got confused by jounalists sometimes too, when they refer song-class subs are nuclear subs

chinese navy's biggest weakness is its lack of air defence

this problem seems to be solved on 052c

anyone confirms?

I still doubt how well 51C handles anti-ship cruise missles at medium range. The published minimum operating alltitude of HH-9 is 500 meters, how is it going to take on modern anti-ship missles? HH-9 is more capable of taking out fix-wing planes, and maybe ballastic missles?

Well the destoryers that would be sold will be stripped of all missle systems leaving only the guns. So personally i think it would be a wste to buy them unless we are going to add something to them
