Here are a few site on hydrofoils. If you have ever been swimming and sliced your hand throught the water, and then tilted its leading edge up or down, you would have felt the pressure on your hand to lift or go deeper. That is the same basic affect. By lifting the hull from the water you reduce drag and so you can go faster.

This is a different type of hydrofoil, the boat looks likes it is ready to tip over, but it works.

So,
its only for speed or its got some more effects?
like if torpedo is launched on the boat it just pass under it?

i don't think so,
Torpedoes don't hit the boat directly, they explode when they are exactly under the boat.

Never heard of these hydro foils, why didn't they became famous?
Though hydro foils seems to give good advantage of speed.

Hydro foil with missiles might be an effective weapon for third world navies.

hydrofoils tend to be unstable. Atleast i think they are. There's a whole sport dedicated to them. To Lift a heavy hull you'll need one heck of an engine!!
