Hello every 1,
i'd like to know why do so few south east Asian military analysts talk so little about the battles which took place in chamb in 1971, Indian troops where forced to withdraw in several key areas within chamb, Very little information is given into the events, the fighting which took place in & around chamb was arguably 1 of the most bloodiest in the western sector.

Maybe this is because after getting a humiliating defeat, none of pakistan's people wants to talk about that war.

there is a full fledged detailed article on the indo-pak war of 1972 based on the documents(court martial proceeding) declassified by pakistani army(it is a very detailed article) on www.defencejournal.com
check the archives of that site.

Hello Faisal,

I have only just stumbled upon this site and your query.

I am looking up the 1971 war and in particular the accounts and reports of it from the Western sector, as my father - Mjaor Emmanuel Dewan fought that war 1971 & he & his team of 1st Battalion 5th Gorkha Rifles did brilliantly in Chhamb. And have been awarded a BATTLE HONOUR for the battle at Shejrah, Khemkaran sector as also the 'Punjab 1971' theatre honour. Gen. Raw Rawlley, GOC 11 Corps presented a siler cup to the Battalion for being the unit that performed best in the Corp Zone during 1971 war.

The First Five Gorkha Rifles (FF) recently in May 2008 celebrated 150 glorious years). Maj Gen Ian Cardozo AVSM & SM also brought out a book - First Five Gorkha Rifles (FF) - An illustrated history. This book also contains the battle and capture of Sejrah on the night of 5/6DEC 1971.

I shall quote from the above mentioned book, "...Major E Dewan was mentioned -in-despatches although he was recommended for a Mah Vir Chakra as it was the momentum of success of the attack led by him that kick-started the success of the operation."

continuing from the above msg...

You may also want to google "abandoned britches 1971" and you will get to read the TIME DEC 1971 issue that states:

"As we come up on the border, the Indian commander receives us. He recounts how his Gurkha soldiers kicked of the operations at 9 o'clock at night and hit the well-entrenched Pakistanis at midnight. `I think we took them by surprise,' he says, and an inspection of the hooch of the Pakistani area commanding officers confirms it.

On his bed is a suitcase, its confusion indicating it was hastily packed. There are several shirts, some socks. And his trousers. Nice trousers of gray flannel made, according to the label, by Mr. Abass, a tailor in Rawalpindi. The colonel, it is clear, has departed town and left his britches behind."
