ISLAMABAD, Jan 4: An Indian Air Force Jaguar aircraft crashed near Bikaner in Rajasthan on Tuesday. The pilot ejected safely, a television report said.

He was taken to a military hospital for examination, it added. The plane crashed in a village, some 20 kilometres from Bikaner. The plane was on a routine sortie when it crashed. -APP

these jets are getting quite old now. maybe they should slowly phase these out as well and replace them with mirages.

the pakistani report says it's a jaguar and the indian report says it's a MiG-21. well the chances are that it was most probably the MiG-21 which india need to phase out big time

India could be covering the Jaguar crash & instead named MiG-21, just to show that only the one that need to be retired r crashing. Anyways most of the articals say its MiG-21.
Why dont they ground them, they have very good line up of ACs now. Su-30,Su-27,MiG-29,Mirage2000-5, Jaguar, Various versions of MiG. Its time oldies go out the back door.

India can't afford to phase them out. They constitute 40% of IAF strength. The older versions like Mig-21FL\M\U are more accident prone and India is phasing them out periodically. The upgraded Mig-21Bisons are more reliable with less chances to crash. It can also serve as Primary Strike Aircraft which can be very useful in conditions when IAF dont know Pakistani air defence systems. The performance of Bison was excellent in recent Indo-Us exercise, in fact, it was second best aircraft along with
Su-30 which defeated F-15cs frequently( even more than Mig-29 and Mirage-2000).
Indians are upgrading at least 125 Mig-21Bis to Bisons which can serve to nation
till 2015.

Its an exercise not a war so u cannot say Su-30 defeated F-15.

They can't ground, its their actual workhorse.
I have a doubt if they are grounded how will the pilots exercise and train.
IAF does not have Su-27 and also Mirage-2005 but they ordered 10 Mirage-2000H (Newer Version) and they also were inducted.
.
It can also serve as Primary Strike Aircraft which can be very useful in conditions when IAF dont know Pakistani air defence systems.
I didn't get u,Why would IAF be ingnorant about Pak Air-defence systems and what it has to do with Mig-21.
I think IAF's favourite and Primary Strike aircraft is Mirage-2000.
Mig-21 is configured as air-defence fighter.
Indians are upgrading at least 125 Mig-21Bis to Bisons which can serve to nation till 2015.
I think HAL must upgrade 100 more Mig-21 so that IAF won't face the problem of Shortage of aircraft.
The actual problem came when LCA got delayed.
If LCA had reached squardon strenght by now, they would have been replacing Mig-21 continously.

The Pakistanis are not utilizing main stream Conventional Air defense systems there SAM system the Anza Stuff is still a mystery for most. they are utilizing a combinations of equipment American LM Radars, Chinese Radar, German Systems, and Now swedish Airborne and ground processing facilities(if the eyrie deal goes through), I doubt IAF would be able fully understand the PAF SAM systems without actually going to war. Information is not just made available on the Internet, this stuff is top secret and high customized to meet the requirements of the service. Alot has changed in PAF since 1999, the main offensive assets are relatively the same-but most of the support systems seem to have changed.

But IAF Will not only surf internet for Pakistan SAM force.
They will use Recon Aircraft(Mig-25 I suppose),Intelligence and may be IRS satellites to gather information on Enemy forces without actually going to the war.

I think both IAF and PAF are equipped with relatively short and medium range SAM's,not more than 30km and don't have ECCM capability.
During they will have problem with Fighters like F-16 and Su-30MKI and bigger trouble will be of they are armed with Long range Anti-RADAR Missiles and EW systems.
For Defence of Cities atleast 70km SAM System with ability to withstand Heavy EW.
I think PAF is trying to get FT-2000 and IAF has many other options.

hello :)
Sorry if I am sounding redundant. . .

but, the jaguar, thogh old, need not be decomissioned. . .

Being a twin engine aircraft, it surely has many advantages over the Mirage-2000

and, its ability to fly low, hugging the terrain, can help it reach its taget, without being easily detected, as happened in the Cooperative cope thunder alaska exersise in 2004 :)
