The Indian Army will get its first woman lieutenant general when Punita Arora is promoted to the rank on Wednesday and assumes command of Pune's Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC).
A graduate of the college, Arora joined the Army Medical Corps in 1968.
She did her post-graduation in gynaecology and obstetrics from the college and was awarded a gold medal for topping the examination conducted by Pune University.
She was awarded the Sena Medal by the president for establishing gynaecology, endoscopy and oncology facilities in armed forces hospitals
