NEW DELHI: The Army today launched "internal inquiry" into the claims of former Pakistan dictator Ayub Khan's son Gohar Ayub that an Indian Brigadier had sold 1965 war plans to Pakistan for Rs 20,000.

Though senior defence officials said the claims appeared "far fetched" as Gohar Ayub is a known hawk in Pakistan, investigations were being carried on the directions of Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee to check the veracity of the claim and, if true, to identify the officer.

"It is difficult to believe that an Indian Brigadier would divulge military secrets for money," Mukherjee told reporters in Karwar in Karnataka saying that the incident took place over 30 to 40 years ago and "We don't know whether the Brigadier is still alive or dead."

"The matter will be investigated", Mukherjee said after dedicating INS Kadamba naval base to the nation.

The Army Chief Gen J J Singh chaired a high level meeting at the army headquarters here along with Director General Military Operations Lt Gen Madan Gopal and Director General Military intelligence Lt Gen Deepak Summenwar.

"If the allegations are correct, it would not take much "time to identify the officer as there were only a handful of Brigadiers at Army Headquarters during 1965", a senior office said.

Two Brigadiers, who were Directors, Military Operations, in the 1965 war, are both dead, while Gohar Ayub claimed that the officer who had received the bribe had risen higher and was still alive.

The army is also checking officers who made trips to UK in 1967, the sources said.
According to Gohar Ayub these secrets lead Pakistan Army to launch a davistating attack on India on the September-6. On the day of war Pakistan Army was suppose to Parade at Rawalpindi instead the program was cancelled & army was diverted to border.

India probes 'sale of war plans'

The Indian army says it is looking into allegations that an Indian brigadier sold its war plans to Pakistan during the Kashmir conflict in 1965.

Gohar Ayub Khan, son of an-ex Pakistan president, said on Monday the brigadier was paid 20,000 rupees (now $335).

Mr Khan did not reveal the brigadier's name but said he was still alive. He said the officer wanted to fund his wife's hobby for canning vegetables.

But on Wednesday an ex-Pakistan army chief said it received no such plans.

Mr Khan, a former Pakistan assembly speaker, made his allegations in an interview with Pakistani newspaper, The News, on Monday in the run-up to the publication of his autobiography.
He said he would give clear indications in his book to expose the officer's identity.

Mr Khan said the officer had now retired after achieving a high position in the Indian army.

Doubt cast

Indian army chief Gen JJ Singh, said on Wednesday: "The army is doing an in-house verification on whether there is any truth in the allegation.

"It is not correct to jump to conclusions or to speculate on a matter like this."
Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee has also announced a government investigation, but said: "I am afraid it is difficult to believe that an Indian brigadier would divulge military secrets for money.

"The way the news item has come up will require detailed analysis. Not to speak of a brigadier, nobody would have the detailed implementation plan."

Echoing Mr Mukherjee, one Pakistani general told The News: "It is almost inconceivable that a brigadier alone had complete knowledge of the detailed secret plan of the Indian army to attack Pakistan in 1965."

The newspaper said senior Pakistani army figures believed the disclosure could be a "publicity stunt" ahead of the autobiography's publication.

Former Pakistan army chief, Gen Mirza Aslam Baig, told an Indian television channel the 20,000-rupee figures was too small to be believed.

"For a secret war plan, the amount should have been 20 lakh rupees (2m)."

Gen Baig said the Pakistani army had received no such war plans from India.

"The only information that we got was from a dispatch rider from Jammu that the Indian army would launch its main offensive from the Rabi and Chenab region. It was a very small plan."

In his allegations, Mr Khan said Pakistani agents exploited the brigadier through his desire to satisfy his wife's whims.

Thousands of troops died in the 1965 conflict, which ended in a stalemate and a UN-mandated ceasefire.

Secrets sale to Pakistan: India zeroes in on two brigadiers

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: India has zeroed in on two former military officials who had held the posts of brigadier in the Directorate of Military Operations (DMO) following a disclosure by Gohar Ayub that the Pakistan Army had bought military secrets from an Indian brigadier during the 1965 war.

Gohar’s claim that the brigadier was then heading the Directorate of Military Operations (DMO) has placed the suspicion on two officers: Brigadier NC Rawlley (retired as a lieutenant general) and Brigadier Narinder Singh (retired as a major general). Both were in the DMO from May 1965 to January 1966.

Gohar, however, told an Indian reporter by telephone that neither of the men were the person he mentioned in an interview on Monday.

Indian security officials said that Gohar’s claim fell through as he said these plans were bought in 1957 when his father was commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Army, which would make them useless for the 1965 war.

Pardon me but Gohar is just Gobar in his head. This seems to be totally exaggerated at best or a lie.

No Brigadier will have IA's full plans since it is made corps by corps. Also, if Ayub really had the plans, it was criminal of him to let IA attack in the Lahore sector.

It clearly given that brigadier at that were director of military operations,So the brigadier will know the plans.
These kind of things did not happen for first time in India.
Bofors,Tehelka,HDW etc.
So it cannot be completely ruled out.

People! What kind of a person would handover 'war plans' for just 20,000 rupees??? At best, I'd agree with the BBC point of view that this is probably just a publicity stunt before the publication of his book to attract interest to what else it might contain!!

The rupee value is not the same as it was in 1965.

if pakistan really had the war plans,,,, then how on earth could they have lost the war??????

Happens all the time, it's call the "Wolf syndrome". They see the trap, and then step right into it because they are busy looking for the traps that they suddenly suspect are all around them.

Itelligance is one thing, the use you make of it is another.
