India is planning to put in place a ‘strategic aerospace command’ to network its assets that are and would be in space for defence purposes, said Air Chief Marshall S P Tyagi.
“Space is one of many altitudes to launch operations and it is essential that we network our assets properly in space. Hence, a separate aerospace command is under serious consideration. A lot of work, though, has to be done to establish this,†the Air Chief Marshall said to newsmen during his visit here on Saturday.
Stressing the readiness of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for ‘a war of tomorrow’, he said this new command would be a natural corollary of inventional strategic use of airspace controlled by the country. It was being envisaged to take care of the requirements of the combined defence forces.
He said the IAF, which was in an advanced stage of submitting a report on the aerospace command, was assigned the task of preparing viable concepts of doctrinal, command and control models presumably in 2000.
Only a few nations like the USA and China had aerospace command and armed with cutting edge technology, they enjoyed a network of surveillance satellites and advanced communication systems to deploy inter-continental ballistic missiles (ICBM) and detect and intercept the same.
According to Mr Tyagi, the height from where the command was operated was immaterial as long as India adhered to international regulations on use of the space. The command was likely to take full charge of defence satellites that India was expected to launch soon.
Once put in place, the command would establish an integrated satellite defence shield that would find India in the select group of nations having hi-tech defence commands in space.

So basically a centralized control station in space?
