NEW DELHI, July 15 (Xinhuanet) -- India's Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Thursday Indian armed forces have lost 21 aircraft in crashes since April last year, and 26 people, including 13 civilians, were killed in these mishaps.

"A majority of the eleven crashes involved Russian-made MiG-series aircraft," Mukherjee said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of parliament).

"A total of 22 civilians were also injured in crashes that occurred in residential areas," he said.

Technical defects were the reason behind seven crashes, while human error by the aircrew caused six accidents, according to figures given by Mukherjee along with his answer.

The causes of seven mishaps were still under investigation by the authorities while one accident remained unresolved.

"A continuous and multi-faceted effort is always afoot by the defense services to enhance and upgrade flight safety," he said.

There was also interaction between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, which makes components for several fighter jets, and the original manufacturers of the jets to overcome technical defects, Mukherjee said.

The Indian Air Force has lost more than 50 fighter aircraft in mishaps since January 2000. Enditem

The problem is that, the MiG-21s are years old. Not even the multirole aircrafts like F-16 have that much service life. Their pilots are good, but the aircrafts being very old have started giving problems. The LCA's Kaveri engines will be completed till 2010 and the aircraft will probably be inducted in 2011 or so. In order to replace the older MiGs, IAF will be pruchasing 126 Mirage 2000-5s, with ToT.

India is not going to war with any country, they dont have any offensive plans coming up so why dont they just ground these mig-21's until they find a replacement or fix some of the problems. grounding them will save everything from lives to $$ & civilians.

all this crap bout india buyin mirages is total bs n nothin more. To start of the way they do there defence deals if india starts of 2day it will take em at least a decade to sign the deal, than with the upgrades of the migs n the induction of the mkis, india is not buyin any ac from france any time soon. so all this talk is crap. camprande amigos. ;)

The main thing is that the Mig-21 is a 'very' demanding aircraft. The bottom line is that they have not been maintained properly and secondly, a lot of rookie pilots are told to take a drive-around in the 'coffins'; so 'naturally' the probability of a crash goes way high than in a normal case scenario. :cop

india has 460 mig 21s,16mig25's,240mig23's and 160 jaguars so if we retire them or ground them all we will have 60su30mki's,60mirage 2000's 70mig29c's and around 160-200 mig27's.hence we have to continue with the migs for some time.

Lalith u r right
Mig-21 are in absoulte condition they have to replace as soon as possible. For Mig-23 they should also be replace but for Jaguars i think they were upgraded last year or this.

this problem with IAF will continue till the induction of LCA tejas.or any thing else.

The most important thing is to train the pilots well and raise the flying hours.

If India retired all mig-21, mig-23 and jaguar, the remaining fighter won't last more than few weeks if attack by other nation.
