IAF scrambles jets as Egypt's airliners violate airspace

Unauthorized Egyptian passenger aircraft have been increasingly violating Israel's airspace near Eilat, prompting the IAF to station Hawk anti-aircraft missile batteries and fighter planes close by, ready to shoot down the Egyptian planes if they take a hostile turn. In several cases, fighter jets have actually been scrambled, then returning quietly to base.

The beefed-up air defense is also there to deal with potential attacks by Saudi Arabian F-15s, deployed at the Tobuq air base just 200 kilometers away despite Israeli protests. Israel has received intelligence that al-Qaida has recruited Saudi fighter pilots and fears they could stage a 9/11-type surprise attack.

The air force, which is on constant alert for potential suicide aircraft, has been increasingly on edge over the past few months as the unapproved Egyptian violations have multiplied.

Since the 1979 peace treaty, Egyptian aircraft have been permitted to fly over Israeli airspace in certain corridors. Even before then, they were able to use an international air corridor from the Jordanian airport in Aqaba, southward along the Gulf of Eilat, toward Sharm e-Sheikh and Cairo. However, many Egyptian aircraft have been taking a western shortcut, without prior Israeli approval, right over the Eilat port and Taba border region. For the watching IAF, this is nerve-janglingly close to the populous hotel area.

In the past six months, there have been at least 25 unauthorized penetrations of Israeli airspace by Egyptian aircraft. All of them have been by passenger jets, not military aircraft. The matter has been taken up "at the highest levels," but so far the Egyptians appear to have done nothing to stop it.

The air force wants to be in a situation in which it can take immediate action should the foreign aircraft suddenly make a maneuver that appears hostile, like changing course and heading toward one of the major hotel complexes or the massive oil storage depot. A decision on downing such a plane would have to be taken within minutes, at most.

As it worries over the potential risk, the air force has begun renovating the long-dormant Uvda air base, about 45 kilometers north of Eilat, to station fighter jets. the IAF has also recently deployed Hawk anti-aircraft batteries closer to the city.

Israel's monitoring of the region's airspace for potential hostile penetrations has, understandably, always been thorough. But since 9/11, the air force has been particularly alert, monitoring potential areas of threat via designated zones.

Only four people have the authority to order the downing of a passenger jet – the prime minister, defense minister, chief of General Staff and commander of the air force. The threat of a hijacked plane being crashed into an Israeli target is so worrisome that a test-drill, with aides to each of the key quartet, is held every week.

Jordanian jets, too, fly over Israel, but they have never been known to violate the procedures by departing from agreed routes. For the moment, indeed, overall airspace cooperation with Jordan is very good. The Jordanians have even granted Israeli carriers permission to fly over the Moab mountains on their flights to Eilat in order to avoid potential clashes with IAF training flights. The Egyptian flights aside, one of the main worries in the IAF relates to Saudi Arabia's F-15 squadron in Tabuq. Until last year, Saudi Arabia had been restricted by the US from deploying F-15s at Tabuq to minimize friction with Israel. But the US, which sold the planes to the Saudis in 1991, lifted that restriction as a modest concession in return for Saudi approval for overflights for US aircraft and missiles striking Iraq.
I think the standard procedure is to force the airliner to land in their bases or shoot it down.Did IAF follow the standard procedure.
I was not able to find out Egyptian Govt reply to this incident.

How can Saudi's F-15 threaten Israel,I thought Saudi and Israeli were good allies as they both are friends of US.
And What is this al-Qaida recruting Saudi Fighter Pilots,Sounds weird.
Does Saudi has connection with Qaida or what?

Osama Bin Laden is a Saudi. It is a known fact that most of the 9/11 bombers WERE Saudi's. Most of the top echelon of Al Qaida are Saudi's. It is reputed that there is in fact VERY strong anti-American and anti-Israeli feelings within the ruling house of Saudi Arabia, but it is concealed by the current rulers.

The Saudi F-15's are F-15C's, they are not Strike Eagles, so their air to ground capability is very limited. As a suicide aircraft however they are VERY dangerous. Imagine the devastation if a supersonic aircraft crashd into a populated area? And the F-15 is one of a very few genuine Mach 2.5 aircraft in the world... Israel might have less than "minutes" of warning should one or more be used for an attack...

I'd only hope the Saudi's keep a VERY close eye on their pilots. Look what poorly trained terrorists managed to do with an aircraft. Imagine what a highly trained fighter pilot could do in a supersonic "kamikaze" attack...

US countered Kamikaze by the end of war isn't it?
The question how can saudi air-force pilots suddenly become Kamikaze pilots,it makes no sense for a professional pilot suddenly to become a Qaida fan and make his Fighter sucidal.

Oh man! They are scared to death with 'civilian' aircraft violations, imagine what would happen if ever a military aircraft did that!! Israelis love to create a mountain out of a molehill!! Relax fellaz!

it's a load of BS in my view. saudi arabia doesn't wanna get cocky with israel at present and get battered the next day. and plus such an attack would p the US off.

Given that they have faced suicide attacks for the past 20 odd years don't you think it reasonable that they may take such a threat seriously? Unfortunately credible intelligence ISN'T published on public websites. So telling them to relax is a bit of a waste of time, mysterious and displays a fairly ignorant attitude.

If a nation adopts a defensive position as great as deploying advanced medium range SAM's, long range radars and air defence fighters, then they are taking their intell very seriously and consider it very credible. They are NOT doing it simply because of "nerves".

Every Country in the world takes the issue of airspace violations seriously, particularly nowadays. France for instance has combat aircraft on permanent readiness and has conducted numerous aircraft interceptions of your apparently "non-threatening" civilian aircraft. Don't you remember what was occurred in New York on the 11th of September 2001, with "civilian aircraft"?

Knowing Israel, its a good thing episodes like this dont turn into something like what happened to the South Korean civil flight KAL 700 something which was shot of the East Siberian coast by Soviet Su-15s because it strayed from its course. I expect the Israelis would claim the Egyptian airliner was on an intelligence gathering mission.

Aussi Digger, admit it that there's a high level of nervousness involved too on the Israeli side no matter how much 'defensive' they claim their actions to be! I wouldn't be surprised if a news turns up tommorow claiming some Palestinian kid stepping on an 'ant' on Israeli soil and the Israelis calling him terrorist and then razing his home to the ground! There is reciprocity involved here, you cant expect to live 'without' fear and nervousness when you put others through it.

I have no doubt they are. And if you had been attacked as many times as they have, and not just by the Palestinian's either, (Yom Kippur, 6 day war etc), YOU would probably be every bit as "nervous" or concerned as they are... If they say they are experiencing repeated airspace violations (and I'd bet they have the data to back this claim up) then they've got every reason in the world to deploy air defence assets as part of an overall strategy (including diplomacy) to prevent any futher "incidents".
