How important are helicopter hangers on ships?

I see that none of the UK's amphibious assult ships have helicopter hangers, also some destoyers have helicopter pads but not hangers, how much does this limit their operating of helicopters?

Hangars are vital for sustaining a helicopter for long periods of time. Not just to house the helicopter from the elements, but to house the tools and parts to maintain the helicopter...

On the other hand many short term patrol missions don't necessarily have to have a hangar, a flight deck with or without a tent to house the helicopter will suffice.

Sea Toby,

Very curious as to the reason why the USN's Burkes dont have an hangar? Was it solely due to space constraints?

the USN has clearly seen the error of their ways, the flight 2as have 2 helicopter hangars. not sure why the flight 1s didnt have one, most older US vessels dont.

The Bay Class, have a hanger below deck.
You need one for maintenance, and to lash the AC down when not at flying stations.

The US Navy has a lot of destroyers compared to other navies, and have more than one escorting a carrier battle group... Not every ship has to have helicopters and hangars when there are other escorting ships which do... The first batch of Burkes replaced ships which didn't have ASW helicopters, the later batches did... There are only enough ASW helicopters for so many ships...

Even ships who have two hangers, don't have a helo onboard.

Several reasons. For one the ships the Flight I's replaced didn't have hangars, they were also more affordable ships compared to a Ticonderoga, and at the time they were designed the USN had plenty (and still does) of small boys with hangars. Not every escort needs a hangar and most of the time one of the dual hangars is turned into a gym.
