I think the project has been delayed because of some transmission issues...

To date Malaysian Army has only received one pre-production model to validate all the upgrades. This was the one paraded on Merdeka Day.

If all goes well, initial deliveries will begin in 2006.

Only then few years later, once the Army has master the tank warfare and fundings are made available, the Army would increase the number of tank regiment to equip 1 brigade.

Do you have any info about plans of TO&E of this Brigade?

Oskarm,

The Malaysian Army is used to British Army system. Maybe the TOE will be based on British Armoured Brigade.

We don't follow US system, because of that we have Regiment etc. as what British military have.

But until know nobody knows what kind of formation they will adopt.

I donk think so. British Armoured Brigade has 90 MBT (in two battalions,45 each), Mechanized Brigade has 58 MBT.

So with the numbers of Malaysian it is posible to have batalion of 45 or 40 tanks.

The Army plan to have a brigade size of their armour, but the govt just approved for 48 tank first.

Maybe for the future there will be additional procurement of second batch of the tank to equip a brigade.

For me, the most important thing for the Malaysian army to gain experience operating those tanks. This is very crucial for them to really understand the operational capabilities, tactics which is suitable to the terrain and geographical area of Malaysia.

I have found some info about possibilities of new amour of Malaysian. In 80’s and 90’s some ceramic armors were designed in Poland. One of them was CAWA-2 witch was an option for Polish PT-91. But probably because of cost savings it wasn’t implemented to our tanks (something like 3/5 of our PT-91 were rebuild T-72M1, and just 2/5 were new tanks). This new amour replaces old Russian design ceramic amour. New parameters of amour are 550 mm RHA vs KE i 800 mm RHA vs CE (for T-72M 330mm KE and 400mm CE, and T-72M1 420/480mm - I found info about 600mm against CE in official Polish Army Newspaper “Polska Zbrojna”). So with adition of polish ERA – ERAWA-2 it should be something like 640 – 670 mm against KE and something like 1300mm against CE (according to results of German tests).

“In May of 2000, there were presentations of Dynamit Nobel Panzerfaust 3 anti-tank grenade launchers for Polish Army as a part of marketing campaign. There were firing tests of Panzerfaust 3 armed with 3T and improved 3-T600 tandem HEAT warheads (Dynamit Nobel claims that 3T is capable of piercing 900mm RHA behind ERA and 3-T600 over 1000mm RHA behind ERA at the hitting angle of 90 degrees). On Polish testing ground 3T was fired upon armoured steel plates of 550mm RHA screened with Erawa-2 at the hitting angle of 30 degrees and 3T-600 was fired at the similar target at hitting angle of 15 degrees. In both situations German warheads pierced through Erawa-2 but then were capable of penetrating only about 400mm of RHA. Germans were surprised by the protecting level gave by Erawa-2.”

So it makes PT-91M immune to nearly all 105mm APFSDS and all direct attack HEAT. I would like to see real tests results, because this information really surprised me. I even didn’t dreamed about so good protection (if it is true) of PT-91M. I don't know if ERAWA is so good or Panzerfaust 3 with 3T is so poor.

The source of information about CAWA-2 is book: http://www.wysylkowo.pl/product_info.php?products_id=63017&language=en Author of this book is main disigner of Polish ceramic and ERA Aromrs. This book is mainly for students, engenniers and so on. There are many equations but on the other hand there are lots of pictures from tests.

Just wondering, what kind of tanks Malaysia have now in their inventory? Also seem like they already give up on expensive US equipment. Can anybody tell?

We dont have tanks currently in our inventory. closest thing to a tank is the Vickers Scorpion Light Tank/Recon Vehicle. That's armed with a 90mm Cockeril Low Velocity Gun with HEAT and HESH rounds.

Operating an MBT is new to us.
