Global Hawk in Australia

This is the Global Hawk called Southern Cross II (named after a famous Australian pioneer aircraft)

Notice in the background one of our old Mirage 111's. It's in the Orange and White of the ARDU research unit. Typically the first jet in any block of major fighters we buy becomes a test bed for weapons development or for flight handling research.

The one in the rear is still active although not listed as such on the register. All the other Mirages were either sold to Pakistan, or became gate guards. The worst ones were parted out.

Prepping for launch. This is shot at the ASW Squadron Air Base facilities where there is a Ground Control Station set up to test the Global Hawk for Transatlantic or Trans oceanic flights. They recently successfully handed off a GH to a controller in Germany, then to California and back to Australia without losing command and control.

No, this is a pure recce platform. The UCAN that locked onto a vehicle carrying Taliban leaders was a Predator armed with Hellfire anti-tank missiles.

nice pics. do u have any info about the wz-2000?
Re WZ-2000 (previously WZ-9). It has been under development at GAIC since 1999.

It's been considered to be a fuselage hybrid of the Predator and the Pioneer. There are some apparent Israeli influences in the design of the fuselage.

/excerpt on

Its stealth design features a fuselage with a flat bottom surface blended seamlessly with long swept wings to reduce RCS (<1m2 head-on). A single turbofan engine (WS-11) sits on top of the tail section with its intake shielded by the wing section and its exhaust nozzle shielded by two "V" shaped tailfins extending 30-40° outwards to reduce both radar and IR signatures. WZ-2000 carries a large satallite communication antenna inside its head bulge for real-time transimission of images and ELINT data back to the ground control station. It also carries EO sensors such as thermal imaging camera or synthetic apperture radar under its nose. WZ-2000 looks generally similar to American Global Hawk long-range stealth UAV but has a smaller size and shorter range. Some specifications: length 7.5m, wingspan 9.8m, max TO weight 1.7t, mission payload 80kg, max level speed 800km/h, ceiling 18,000m, combat radius 800km, loitering time 3hr. The development of this UAV would also provide valuable experience and technology for future stealth cruise missiles.

The latest news indicated that WZ-2000 first flew on December 26, 2003.
