It's strange to see a US ships named after a living and perfectly healthy former US president ! Reagan was too ill, and Carter got his submarine, but a carrier is so much more impressive :D

President Bush senior was after all a USN pilot in WW2, still, wow ;)

thanks for the link

cheers

This trend of naming ships after persons still alive started with retired Georgia congressman Carl Vinson. Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, and now George H.B.Bush, all former presidents, have continued this trend.

There once was a time when battleships were named after states, cruisers after cities, and submarines after fish. Unfortunately, people, cities, and states have now been used to name submarines. At least destroyers and frigates are still being named after naval heroes.

Sea Toby I agree with you 100%. Naming of CV's after politicans started when JFK was killed. I would love to re-name certain CVN's because certain politicians do not deserve to have a CVN named afer them. Espically if they are still breathing!

Here goes...

CVN-77= USS Yankee Station. America or Enterprise would be good also. For those of you historically challenged Yankee staion was the area that USN CV's launched air strikes against N. Vietnam and Viet Cong targets. The longest sustained CV action in history. Plus the USN has only one other ship named after anything from the Vietnam conflict. The USS Hue City(CG-66)

CVN-70=USS Eagle.

CVN-74=USS Coral Sea.

CVN-75=USS United States. By the way "United States" was the original name for CVN-75 until democrats started to cry about naming the ship after a democrat. Politicians..jeez...

I say rename those CVN's! I have no problems with the other named CVN's.

Yes, especially carriers named after Ronald Reagan, Harry Truman, and Dwight Eisenhower. None of these presidents ever served in the US Navy. At least John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, and George H.B. Bush served in the navy. However, I would prefer to use carrier names of the past. These names should see a return: Saratoga, Lexington, Yorktown, and Ranger. Other possible great names would be Coral Sea and Midway.

I am with you. I think all carriers should be the namesakes of their famous predecessors. It hurts that there is no Hornet or Yorktown in the fleet. Once they decom Enterprise I will have a cow if they don't name CVX after it.

Thank you!:)

I'd love to see those names back on active ships. But the Problem is that those ships Yorktown,Hornet, Lexington & Midway are musuems now. Maybe that is a hinderance to using those names. But pure politics is probally the reason. One of the CVN-78 class ships should be named Coral Sea. If not what a shame.

Once a ship is decommed and stricken from the naval register the name is up for grabs...like USS Texas for example. It's only when a ship is moth-balled that they can't pass the name.

Yes but the RN was having a case of the PCs a few years back when someone made a big deal about naming ships after famous battles, as the enemies in most of those battles are now allies!

I would only use names of former naval heroes, of naval battles, or of ancient & glorious ships...
Though in Italy we use all sorts of names...
> heroes of the "Risorgimento" who contributed to the reunification of Italy in the 1860s
> naval heroes for destroyers and new build FFGs (FREMM) and SSKs
> name of winds for older FFGs
> name of mythological creatures for corvettes
> name of volcanoes for fleet suppliers

cheers

I heard the rumor that the USN's CX willed be named after President Clinton since I believe he was the President the program was started under. Can we just call it the "Love Boat" if they do that?:eek:nfloorl:

Surely after exhausting the list of great Presidents and long term congressmen, which I understand as not to cede to much power to the executive while retaining respect and recognition to the all powerful legislature they CVN 77's will go back to the classics, America, Yorktown, etc surely they won't go down any other path, I suppose they could name the LHAR after these but it wouldnt quite be the same:nutkick

I watched the webcast of the christening. One of the speakers was sen. Warner, he served in WW2, was a navy secretary and has been chairman of the senate committe for the military. they named one after Carl Vinson as he was a polititan who loved and supported the navy. I wonder, as Warner is stepping down if CVN 78 will be the USS John Warner?
Just an Idea

I would like to see new ships named after past famous ships that served in the navy like: Monitor, Arizona, Yorktown, Hornet, Benjamin Franklin, and others.
