This is actually one of the few Russian aircraft I like. If they managed to fix up their QA problems it would be lethal. (not that it isn't now). I'd love to see one of these with the engines machined up properly and decent tub electronics.

PROGRAMME:
Production development of Su-27IB, to replace MiG-27, Su-17 and some Su-24s from 1996. First production Su-34, built at Novosibirsk, flew 18 December 1993; at Zhukovsky flight test centre early 1994.
DESIGN FEATURES:
Generally as described for Su-27IB. Changes include, dielectric nose to house nav/attack and terrain-following/avoidance radar; tail fins containing integral fuel tankage; titanium cockpit armour; new main landing gear units with smaller, tandem wheels; and a longer, larger diameter tail cone. This has been raised and now extends as a spine above the rear fuselage to blend into the rear of the cockpit fairing. It houses at its tip a rearward facing radar to detect aircraft approaching from the rear. Su-34 may carry underwing a number of rearward facing infrared homing air-to-air missiles developed from the Vympel R-73 (AA-11 'Archer') for use against such aircraft flying at heights from 50 to 13000 m (165-42650 ft) over ranges of 1 to 10 or 12 km (3300 ft to 6-7.5 miles). The brake-chute is repositioned in the spine to the rear of the spine/fairing juncture.
