LOS ANGELES -- A key Defense Department panel has approved Lockheed Martin Corp.'s (LMT) F/A-22 stealth fighter jet -- a key target in proposed White House budget cuts -- for full-rate production, people familiar with the matter said.
These people said the Pentagon's Defense Acquisition Board met this week and gave the green light to the controversial fighter, which has overcome a number of software problems but still faces criticism for its high cost.
The Air Force insists it needs 381 F/A-22s, which can fly at supersonic speeds for prolonged distances, to maintain its global air superiority. But the White House has proposed cutting the buy to around 180 to save some $10.5 billion by 2011.
Lockheed has been making the F/A-22 under a low-rate production contract for 83 planes for the Air Force. The Bethesda, Md., defense company has made 49 so far and delivered 39 to the Air Force.
