Eurofighter Single-Seat Production Aircraft Airborne

HALLBERGMOOS, Germany, February 27 // -- PS001, the fourth Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA 4),successfully carried out its first flight, today. This new Eurofighterproduction test aircraft, assembled and operated by EADS CASA Defence andSecurity Systems - Military Aircraft, features the most advanced technologyof the programme.

IPA4 is the first single seat production aircraft to roll offthe final assembly
line. IPA4 offers the highest standard of hardware /software integration, which represents a technical and functional evolutionof the weapon system. The aircraft also incorporates an enhanced standardEJ200 engine that was tested in the air for the first time during the IPA4maiden flight.

As well as other aircraft destined for flight tests, the mainrole of IPA 4 is
to continue with the certification of the design andfunctionality of the
systems under EADS CASA Defence and Security Systems -Military Aircraft
responsibility. This is a critical role in demonstratingthe operational
specification of the weapon system to the customer nations. The test plans
involve flights directed towards verifying new audio and MIDScommunications
functions. Testing of air-to-surface armaments is alsoplanned.

A special series of tests will be dedicated to environmentalflight testing.
EADS CASA Defence and Security Systems - Military Aircraft, leader of the
environment control systems, is responsible for demonstratingthe complete
functionality of the aircraft in extreme temperature conditions. To fulfil these
objectives the aircraft will move to Sweden next winter tocarry out flight
testing in extremely cold weather. In the summer of 2005,IPA 4 will go to
Arizona to perform flight testing in an extremely hotclimate.

Pablo de Bergia, President and CEO of the division in Spain, described his
satisfaction at the launch of the flight test: "Although wehave started
delivering the first production units to the national customers, our duty is far
from finished. With IPA 4 we will continue to developtechnology and demonstrate
the continuous growth of the Eurofighter weaponsystem."

What is new in IPA 4?

The communications system has been enhanced with theimplementation of the Direct Voice Input (DVI), the navigation and fuelsystems oral information (DVO) and a voice order system (VOS) that can beconfigured to be used with several helmets and radios interoperable betweenEurofighter and other platforms.

Another new system is the MIDS (Multifunction InformationDistribution System) that allows the integration of information inoperational networks to define targets and new missions. MIDS permits secureexchange of air and ground data.

To enhance the navigation system TACAN, MILS (MicrowaveLanding System) and DME-P (Distance Measuring Equipment Precision) will alsobe added.

As a weapon platform, the aircraft in air-to-air combatoperation can carry out
real or simulated short-range and medium-rangemissile launches. It also offers the possibility to use combat air-to-surfacesimulated weapons (pilot training). To support this functionality, the radarincludes new air-to-air and
air-to-surface pursuit modes, air-to-surfacetracking, automatic target
cinematic range calculation and sensor fusion.

The aircraft also features a defensive capability for securetransmissions,
complete masking of transmitter equipment and theincorporation of basic
electronic countermeasures ECM / ESM including chaffand flare.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is the world's most advancedswing-role combat aircraft, developed by the leading aerospace companies,Alenia Aeronautica, BAE SYSTEMS, EADS-Germany and EADS-CASA, of the fourpartner countries, Italy, United Kingdom, Germany and Spain. EurofighterTyphoon features unrivalled technology, designed for the defence needs of the21st Century.

Agile and highly manoeuvrable, the twin-engine Eurofighter Typhoon isdesigned to operate from hastily prepared bases and small runways forworldwide operations. It is equipped with an advanced multi-mode radar and anextensive range of sensors and electronic countermeasures.

The aircraft's ability to gain air superiority beyond visualrange (BVR) and in
close combat, and at the same time deliver high sortierates against air, naval and ground targets in all weathers with a variety ofweapons, demands close attention to pilot workload. In Eurofighter the pilotflies through use of a computerized flight control system, which offers fullcarefree handling.

A strong emphasis has been placed on reducing cost of ownership inaddition to outstanding performance and flight safety. Eurofighter Typhoon isless expensive to run than the generation of aircraft it is designed toreplace.

The Eurofighter partner nations plan to take delivery of 620aircraft: 180 for
Germany, 121 for Italy, 87 for Spain and 232 for the UnitedKingdom. An
additional export order of 18 Eurofighter Typhoon has been agreedwith the
Government of Austria.

The first four Series Production Aircraft recently joined theflight clearance
programme following maiden flights in February 2003. Thisfollows first flights
of three Instrumented Production Aircraft (IPA) inApril 2002. Following Type
Acceptance on 30 June, 2003, deliveries to thefour partner nations have
commenced.

The Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defense has agreed anindustrial participation programme with Eurofighter GmbH for the futureenhancement of the weapon system. Eurofighter Typhoon has also been selectedby Greece to meet its respective requirements for a future fighter.

Will Eurofighter be exported to other countries ??
If yes, then how soon can they start exporting considering they will have to first complete the order of 620 aircraft by Eurofighter partner nations.

Definitely, Eurofighter Typhoon will be exported. Current 6 (six) air forces are inducting "Typhoon" in its inventory..........namely UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece and Austria.

Based on Austria purchase of 18 aircrafts, the price is Euro 62.9 million each unit or $ 79 million.

So how does it compare to US's aircrafts current as well as proposed ones like F-22 etc.
I feel F-22 has an edge over Eurofighter in technology and advancement as well price factor.

Its not that expensive, less expensive than Rafales!
Yeah but as the graph depicts.. Eurofighter Toofan is quite a bit "more effective"

It's my belief that the Eurofighter will be the 2nd best fighter in the world in the coming decade behind the FA-22. Unfortunately for most countries, the FA-22 even if it were affordable, which it is not, will still be unavailable for purchase, due to the level of technology and complexity of the aircraft.

F-22 is a 5th generation fighter whereas Eurofighter is a 4th generation fighter. F-22 are definatly superior to Eurofighter.

Rafales costs 50 million.
