In another article i read it said that Ethiopia bought $20 million worth of weapons in 2001 from North Korea.
This is great news as i remember asking about North Korean arms sales on defensenews.com a bit back.
The only question now is what weapons diid Ethiopia get for their money?

Are the North Koreans allowed to sell weapons?
I think so. I'm pretty sure there was no UN sanctions on that matter. I think now, after last nucler test, some sanctions was introduced - but here i'm not very sure. Either way, NK always can smuggle what it need throught China.

Of course. There was actually an incident a while ago in which the Spanish navy triumphantly announced they'd caught a ship full of smuggled N. Korean missiles, & the Yemeni government indignantly demanded that Spain hand them over, since Yemen had bought & paid for them - completely legally.

Some countries have imposed sanctions on N. Korea, but those sanctions only apply to the countries which have imposed them. US decrees have no legal force in Ethiopia.

Tank parts... it is no secret DPRKs tank fleet is being cannabalized.
North Korea makes tank parts. Indeed, it makes whole tanks. Its problem is affording imports of fuel & other raw materials to make the things with.

It's used exports (e.g. of missiles) to fund purchases for its own forces in the past, & this may be more of the same, exporting parts to finance the production of more parts, so as to be able to do less cannibalisation.

there yeah go, I was under the impression that N.K was under some kind of general arms embargo..... I guess most articles you read in the US papers impley that the N.K is doing something illegal when detailing there export activites, I should pay more attention!

What US paper is that? This is an International paper, in fact it says Paris on the front page.

Maybe you meant some other US paper when you accused them of slanting the news. Do please list these.

Rich the article was pick up from the NY Times.

Three months after the United States successfully pressed the United Nations to impose strict sanctions on North Korea because of the country’s nuclear test, Bush administration officials allowed Ethiopia to complete a secret arms purchase from the North, in what appears to be a violation of the restrictions, according to senior American officials.

I was not aware the DPRK was self sufficient in tank production. I assumed they relied on Soviet stocks as the NYT article stated.

Daily, NYtimes, Washingtonpost, Chicago Tribune, The La Times.

Less the NYtimes since they started to charge for there comment pieces.

And they do slant the news, all papers do, there reported from a national perspective, you can't get around it.

What news did they slant? I can go off and name a bunch of Irish papers too.

60% of ethiopia's export income comes from coffee. The US is the worlds largest coffee market, I think it consumes around half of the world output; maybe a bigger percentage of the premium stuff like Ethiopian Sidamo. So that's quite an irony when the money makes it's way into NK

Let's not forget the main strength of Ethiopia's MBT inventory is the ex-Yemeni T-72s. Spare parts for the old T54/55 come from all over the former Soviet block, N. Korea being just one source among many

cheers
