TEL AVIV [MENL] -- The European Union has decided to include Israel in a major satellite reconnaissance project.
Israel has reached agreement with the EU to participate in the Galileo navigation satellite project. The $3.7 billion program calls for a network of 30 navigation and surveillance satellites and 20 ground stations to improve the EU's intelligence-gathering capabilities.
The agreement was initialed on Wednesday between Israel and the EU. The agreement was expected to be followed by negotiations over Israel's financial and technical contributions to the project, meant to begin operations in 2008.
"This agreement provides for cooperative activities on satellite navigation and timing in a wide range of sectors, notably science and technology, industrial manufacturing, service and market development, as well as standardization, frequencies and certification," a European Commission statement said. "It also paves the way for Israel to take part financially in the program through a stake holding in the Galileo Joint Undertaking, the body managing the program.
