Does this have a practical use?

Totally useless I think. A wingsuit is fancy, but why wouldn`t you just let the aircraft fly you another mile and avoid the hassle?
Jumping totally without gear seems also a bit impractical. No place to put a rifle or a bergen.
Looking forward to this in James Bond movies though :D
(also if you didn`t understand it, they have parachutes on, so its not faster than a parachute. Just pulling the cord late)

A wingsuit is a jump suit that shape into an airfoil and let you "fly" a little distance. Bergens and weapons will destroy the airfoil.
Paratroopers without any gear are useless.
If you need extra distance you just fly your canopy there.

You got a good point there, we are not ready for the James Bond approach yet, but you have to admit it is a pretty neat concept.:D

Wow... say what you will about Dr. Strangelove, but he knows his sh!t.

I have to admit, I never did like Parachutes. I tried it on my own dime a while back. On my first jump, I landed wrong and all the toes on my left foot turned black. Second jump- I was too far down at the head, and nearly did a somersault in the harness when the chute opened. The Third time, I did everything right... and the last word I would use to describe that jump would be "fun".

I had a much better time with hang-gliders.

That last link shows why I was interested in this idea. Yes, I noticed the parachute in the first video. THat was not the point... and not every Special Forces member has to go in with 50 kilos of junk to haul around. In fact, that defeats the purpose in many missions.

Thanks again to Grand Danios, that made this thread worth while.

Could I have an exaple of a mission where you wouldn`t lug around any kit?
Even if you where to meet up with contact in civies, you would still carry all the normal stuff to a LUP, then change and do the meet. This gives you options if things go tits up.
Give an example where you don`t need weapons, food, cammo, coms, escape and evasion kit and other mission critical gear, but still need to para behind enemy lines.

The gryphon might be usefull when its fully developep, because its suppose to have a max range of 200 km and let you carry 50kg of kit.

Watch the video. This seems to be useful, steerable, and a hell of a lot faster than parachutes.
The down-side is the noise, and a probable reduction in the load you could carry... but Para's have been over-loaded for far too many years. Time to change that tradition.
Nope, sorry, have to go against the grain here and say it is perfectly valid if you look at future exo-skeleton tech and some other little gems in the pipeline. Give it another generation and it will be very interesting. and for those who poo hoo my time line, just think outside the box a little and see what the integration of a few different technologies could do for the vertical envelopment arena.

cheers

Snatch and grab, assination, pathfinders, sabotage in advance of ground OPs, observation of a poppy field in A-stan about to be hit, or any other operation where removal of the dropped assets will occur within hours, rather than days.
