Not sure if I should start a thread on this but I thought I ask, first do US Navy aircraft carriers typically carry marines on board and if so how many? And when I say marines I mean actual solders. Do carriers have fire teams on board?

What is the primary role of the marines on board a carrier?
Are they aboard all nuke armed or powered ship's in the USN besides the amphibs?

My guess would be that they're primarily security-oriented, guarding the brig, responding to intruders, maybe even providing a VBSS force, etc.

Marines are used as reaction forces for small flare ups on carriers, usually acting as guards for weapon storage and visiting vips (both to make sure they are not getting lost (lost or spying) and to protect them incase somehow a hostile force gets onboard), or so I have been told by some marine friends. Submarines do not carry a complement of marines and the only time that I saw them onboard was when they were doing a walk thru for familiarization incase the ship got taken and they had to retake the ship. They were on the pier and the hills surrounding the explosive handling warf when ever we were onloading or offloading our slbms, from the chief: dont go up there unless you have a good reason and if they yell at you to stop, stop, get on the ground if they need you to do so and just do what they say, I dont need my guys full of holes b/c your being stupid." :ar15 :splat :flame

Don't think any amphibs are nuke powered and they retired all the nuke crusiers, DD, and FF.

Sorry gents I do not want to embarrass anyone but Carriers stopped having MARTDET in 1998. The only Marines assigned to CVNs are assigned to the airwing..

The Corps' Salty Seadogs Have All But Come Ashore: Seagoing Traditions Founder as New Millenium Approaches

To make matters worse, in 1997 the Quadrennial Defense Review recommended more than 3,000 cuts from the Corps' nonoperating forces. The largest cut was made by removing 1,771 billets from the MCSF battalion. The Commandant had decided to beef up the Fleet Marine Force in favor of the ships' detachments, a strategic manpower decision he was forced to make.

By January 1998 All Marine Corps Message 24/98 announced that all Marine ships' detachments (totalling 11 officers/275 enlisted) were to be disestablished. The nondeployed detachments stood down on Jan. 31, while the remaining deployed detachments were to stand down following their deployments.
