Defence careers research...

Hi everyone,

I am currently doing some career research for myself as I wish to retrain in something I am interested in with good future prospects, most career advice will suggest you look at your own skills and talents along with your interests, doing what you enjoy etc...

This is what leads me here, since the age of about 8 I have been massively interested in the military and defence industries, specifically military aircraft initially but this later broadened into land units and small arms.

I have collected various books and materials on aircraft / weapon systems of the worlds armed forces and generally just enjoy exploring the facts and figures of these units, acquiring knowledge of the various types of units, their uses and deployment.

This is a subject that fascinates me and I enjoy reading the articles that we find on this site for example.

What I would like to know from people with more knowledge and experience of this area than me, is about career options or opportunities that I may be overlooking that might be able to make use of this real interest or if I am better of leaving this as a hobby, for information I am a UK citizen which I mention as obviously this affects positions available to me (no joining the CIA for me!).

Positions I have researched so far:

Military Intelligence: Specifically TECH intel, i.e studying foreign military capabilities, manpower / systems etc... on paper this would seem to be the closest match although I am unsure if this is a specialist profession in itself or part of a wider job role.

Security Consultant - advising people / organisations of security threat risks in various places - cannot gain much insight into this profession, what I have found is that as with most consultant positions this is rarely gained without extensive experience, usually ex military / senior law enforcement.

Now, I guess the obvious answer would be military intelligence, however I am not sure the Military is necessarily a good fit for myself, also I am more skilled in verbal /communications type roles as opposed to technical and scientific roles which I know is a large focus of the defence industry.

So in summary, can anyone here think of any positions that would suit someone who has a keen interest in military systems and enjoys extensive research, reporting and even public speaking, I am open to all suggestions as I am a long way off in terms of being qualified but this is the first step in that process.

Any useful advice will be gratefully received!

Have you looked into either a spokesman role in a unit that does personnal assignments, comunications specialist (probably would be an officer of some type) who would be doing press releases for the UK MoD, also maybe public relations for some type of arms manufacturer (BAE or the like comes to mind), sure the CIA is out but is MI5/6? The personnal man in the US navy when i got out was good at comunications and gave some pretty decient presentations for when we were exiting the military (classes on how to get used to being a civilian again), maybe this would be something that would interest you.

As to specifics if you find this interesting you might be able to make a go of it in various other vocations and do this on the side, as I'm not sure how much of monetary compensation there is in it, might also want to try writing novels and such as various writers include alot of tech info into their books (Tom Clancy for example).

Well I'm pressed for time so I'll leave it at that and come back later if I think of anything else good. :D

Ok,

You have an interest in the military & related subjects....

The brutal truth about this subject & for that matter ANY employment, is YOUR skills.

So, lets ask some basic questions....

You state your a long way from being qualified, do what does that mean ?
Are you still in the education system in secondary school, working towards your GCSE's ?

If you're not in school / college, what quals do you have ?

At the moment, because of the global recession, I KNOW that many companies are letting employees go & retaining those with core, specialist skills that have more the 5 years remaining till retirement.

So, where does that leave you ?

Do YOU have a specialist skill ?

For Instance, have you looked seriously at the UK inteligence communities websites ?

THESE are where the specalists start.

Remember, all that you see in Hollywood, in programmes like SPOOKS, & books written by the likes of John Le Carrie are not always true.

The majority of intelligence work is done by people, stuck in offices,day-in, day-out, reviewing 1,000's upon 1,000's of pieces of data, like e-mails, financial reports, etc, etc.

It is MUNDANE & Boring. So much so that part of the interview process will probably involve a form of 'personality-interrorgation' (e.g. Myers-Briggs)

So.......

What do YOU think ???
