Hi I am new to this site and would like to talk to current and former members of The Royal Tasmanian Regiment, including 12th Battalion and 40th Battalion.

I am a member of 12/40th Royal Tasmanian Regiment (12/40 RTR), and have a keen interest in speaking to people about the Regiment, personalities, history and badges.

Thanks:)

Hi stewtas and welcome to DT.

I was a former member of the Regiment but it was a long time ago. When I joined around the beginning of 1964 I was a member of the Derwent Company, as the former battalion had been reduced to two independent companies, the Derwent Company which was based in Hobart and the northern based Launceston Company. In 1965 when an expansion resulted in the two companies amalgamating to form the 1st Battalion, RTR, I was assigned to B company as a lowly section corporal. Although we were designated as a battalion we were way under strength and B company only had two rifle platoons at the time. More platoons formed as a number of people joined the reserve as an alternative to being drafted for 2 years of full time National Service, but I thought this had an adverse affect on morale, with poor turnouts on Tuesday evening parades, although it was good for promotion prospects!

In 1972 that the 1st Battalion was split and the 12th and 40th battalions reformed.

It is a long time (1966) since I left the reserve but you are welcome to PM me (once you are able), if you would like info re some of the Regiment's mid 1960's personalities or activities.

Cheers

Tas
