$300m soldier clothing plan unveiled

October 27, 2006

DEFENCE Minister Brendan Nelson has released a new clothing plan for the defence force after soldiers complained about ill-fitting boots and potentially flammable combat jackets.

The plan proposes spending more than $300 million on garments from 2007 to 2011.
It follows a defence inquiry which examined practices and processes for procuring defence clothing and made 29 recommendations for reform.
"The ADF Clothing and Personal Equipment Procurement Plan is significant for not only informing industry of Defence's intentions into the future but providing industry with the opportunity to provide the latest and best available clothing and personal equipment to ADF personnel," he said.
"This inaugural edition of the ADF Clothing and Personal Equipment Procurement Plan 2007-2011 will be updated every June as the clothing and personal equipment requirements of our ADF personnel are reviewed."
Dr Nelson said the plan retained the flexibility to manage unforeseen requirements for the ADF through operational deployments and technological development.
He said the clothing plan resulted from the independent Clothing Review Team report into the Clothing Group launched in July.
It would further enhance defence's relationships with the clothing and textile industry, Dr Nelson said.
"It provides industry with a guide to proposed plans for clothing and personal equipment which will help industry plan their future business with increased certainty."
