Chinese bomber

I read on globalsecurity.org about China developing an H-9 bomber said to be similar to the f-117. I've done a lot of searching and have found next to nothing. Does anyone have any info about this?

Hmmm ... I wouldnt trust global security. Some of their articles seem to be writen by children or some thing, with poor language & talking too much about other things and less about defence equipment.

Apart from this I have seen them making up stories & hyping things. i.e. Iran ordering 40 FC-1/JF-17 Thunders fighters from China/Pakistan. AFAIK, no such deal has taken place. Even if it did, global security wouldnt be the 1st & only to know.

Coming to H-9, I dont think China has any such program. The only know stealth program in China is the J-XX project.

well, F-117 is a stealth strike platform - and fundamentally short range - its not a bomber.

besides, the US already regards it as an "emerging obsolescent." There is some irregular but persistent traffic that the F-22 is superior to it in LO terms. The USAF has also mumbled a few times that they're ready to park it from active duty.

Other than the local copy of the TU-16 Badger China has no bombers. That is, if with "bomber" you mean big long-range dedicated bombers such as the B-52 or the TU-22M3.
There have been several rumours of TU-22M3 Backfire being transferred from Russia to China. Though for the moment no source has ever confirmed this.
The other rumour regards the Russian SU-34, though it is barely becoming operational in Russia as we speak.
So I would be very suprised if China were developing a dedicated bomber while even Russia is slowly reducing its number of bombers (only the very expensive TU-160 Blackjack will remain).

cheers

The F-117 will be parked officially next year, from what I understand. I think that the airframes have seen and been through too much and that while they are invisible, they can't last forever.

Besides, with the development of the JSF and Raptor, who can deliver even more munitions and will have a greater range while still having stealth capabilities, they have become obsolete.

I understand globalsecurity.org sometimes presents information that can not be corroburated. In the case of the h-9 I did some digging and came up with a few other sources:

This comes from www.ndu.edu/inss/China_Center/CMA_Conf_Oct00/paper8.htm "There are also unconfirmed rumors of an H-9 bomber project that may involve some Russian technical assistance."

It's amazing the F117 is being retired already, after something like 15 years maximum service life ! :( With the JSF still not operational and the Raptor available in limited numbers (< 200 overall), I'm surprised the 60-something F117 are not being upgraded for more service life.

cheers

a little bit longer than 15 years - they were first deployed on an active strike mission in 1982. ;)

Wow amazing, they are already 24 years old ! It seems strange that the Tornado IDS (just to name the fighterbomber I know best) and the F117 have basically the same age, they seem to belong to entirely different generations !

The fact that the f-117 and its technology beginning development in the late 70's it shows how far behind the US China really is. Assuming that the h-9 bomber is similar to the f-117, it would place Chinese technology more then 25 years behind the US.

I can't see China operating a stealth bomber anytime soon. Even the J-XX, will probably take 10-15 years to come to fruition. I think the PLA-AF will explore the TU-22 option before they even look at developing a long-range stealth strike platform.
