Hi Guys, I am currently writing a book, and part of it is set in the British Army in Afghanistan.

I just want help... I just need to know some things to keep realism...
what living conditions are like.
what weapons are used, protection.
The assault vehicles descripitions inside (e.g. Warrior
how you are transported around Afghan and from UK to afghan.
What you eat.
What the cities are like?
Etc, any piece of info is really appreciated it.
If it gets published, all you guys will be in the acknowledgements .

Cheers

Damo26,

Please don't take this as an insult, but here are the general facts of the matter, as I see them.

1. Youd don't spell well enough to be a serious writer, at least not in english.
2. Some of the things you are asking for go under a rule called "Opsec", which means Operational Security. If a British soldier told you everything you want to know, i can find at least 3 places where he would be trashing his own Opsec and that of his comrades.
3. If any British troops actually were/are dumb enough to truthfully answer all of these questions with extensive information, I would probably think more than once about alerting proper british authorities about problems in the british army concerning Opsec.

Since I see that no one has answered, I hope all british men/women here think like I do.

If indeed you are a serious writer, i urge you to contact the british army/navy/airforce, and perhaps speek to personel there. They will probably be qualified to give you the right kind of information.

I suggest that in addition to following Karl XIIs advice, you register at ARRSE, the unofficial British Army forum, & ask your questions there. It's full of current & former soldiers.

If you can convince them you're what you say you are, you will find them extremely helpful, & you will get excellent information, though nothing that is covered by operational security (OPSEC).
Be warned: they're a robust & rambunctious lot, with a deep loathing for fakes of any kind, & will be very suspicious indeed of questions relating to matters which should not be made public.
.
Up to you.

Ok, thanks anyway.

One thing though. Perhaps my spelling isn't up to scratch because I spend my time writing a book, so I don't really care what it is like in a forum, but thanks for the insult/advice.

As for you guys thinking I'm suspicious... Give me a break, I'm not asking for information which is going cause any alarms to ring.

Guess as I'm not part of the army I'm not in the clique, what a waste of time.

not true at all.members of the services have a right to be deeply suspicious in this climate and your lack of tact and understanding of this is a cause for justifiable concern.if you are trying to write a book on military matters and are looking for realism, then security of members of the forces would be an aspect of this.......

in any case swerve gave you a very good source of information that,if you are genuinely, interested in gaining insight, will be very useful to you.....so i should wind your neck in and take advantage of it......

Most of us aren't part of the army. I'm certainly not, & never have been, in any armed force.

Given the attitude you have displayed here, I already know that your book will be so deeply flawed as to be not worth reading. You have been given some sound advice & pointed to some good sources of information, & have responded with rudeness, & dismissal of all that has been said to you. That tells me that you're not interested in learning, in building trust, or in attempting to evaluate data & its sources dispassionately. In other words, you do not appear to be capable of good research, or analysis of any information you do stumble across. A pity. Ah well, perhaps you'll learn one day.

Damo26,

I did not mean this as an insult, however, having been in the navy myself I have heard gruesome storries of what can happen when something as important as OPSEC is disregarded. Even though you say you don't think any of the information you requested is in any way endangering british fighting men and women, you are wrong. It's easy as that.

If I was you, I'd have a little more respect for the men and women who actually go to the wars others would not want to touch with a ten thousand foot pole.

Anyway, Iäm getting carried away again. We are not trying to insult you, but OPSEC is VERY important in these days of war on terror.

Have a nice weekend!

/Karl
