LONDON: Malaysia may buy a British-made high-powered frigate for the modernisation programme of the Royal Malaysian Navy, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Discussions are still at the preliminary stage as the Ninth Malaysia Plan’s defence allocations have yet to be finalised,†he said.

Najib, however, added that the frigate’s main parts would be built in Malaysia in line with the Government’s aspirations to upgrade the technical and engineering skills of the people. “Except for certain high-tech equipment such as the command control centre and missiles, the integration of the various components would be done in Malaysia,†he said

What do you guys think it is? There was mention last year of a more heavily armed lekiu II being offered. However, BAE also has a new F3000 frigate design.

Unless it is sure that vessels will be new-built, it might well be (one or more) surplus Type 23 Duke-class frigate.

Well Malaysia's current Lekiu frigates are based on the duke class frigates that Britain have. I'm pretty sure they would be built though but then again you may be right. Malaysia has a current requirement for 4 more frigates. Any other suggestions as to what frigates Malaysia should get? I think the Meko X frigate's quite nice.
