I have a Brazilian Labour who works for me in the construction industry.
He has a Student Visa and is able to work only 20 hrs a week.
Out of the blue he asked me "is it possible for me to join the Australian Army"
He is very keen on Joining the ARMY.

He is 21 years old, fighting fit.His English is ok,he understands, but you have to speak slow(but he is studying English). He wants to become an Australian citizen.

So i ask the forum if they have any advice i could pass onto him.......

Regards

When I was at the YOU session (recuirtment day) the DFR(Defence Force Recruiting) guy sternly told us that only Australian citizens could join the ADF due to security reasons. This is what I got from the recruiting website-

Citizenship Requirement

Only Australian citizens are permitted to serve in the ADF.

If you are a Permanent Resident of Australia, the ADF may consider a temporary waiver of the citizenship requirement if the position for which you are applying cannot be filled by an applicant who meets all the citizenship requirements, and then only in exceptional circumstances. You will be required to obtain Australian citizenship as early as possible following enlistment or appointment.

More information on citizenship requirements and the citizenship waiver process is available from the Recruitment Centre and your local Defence Force Recruiting Centre.

Student Visas do not mean anything to be honest unless if he wants to study here and live here for four years before he can apply for citizenship but that would be a very expensive option. Right now I doubt that he would get a waiver as Army positions are getting really competitive now due to the late financial crisis. I think the only option your friend has is to either get his ass here as quick as possible and to earn his citizenship or to marry an Aussie sheila.

I hope this helps your friend.

Ta kittikhun

I told him it will be very difficult for him if he is not an Australian Citizen,or cannot speak English to well.He is pretty disappointed ,but i explained to him that he cannot just come to a foreign country, and expect to be given priority over Citizens of that country.

I also passed your info onto him

As for Marrying an Aussie sheila,i could not do that to him:D
