Various raw materials that will have non-defence applications have been discovered during the research for Brahmos missile
MADURAI, PTI:

The “Brahmos†missile programme taken up by the country in collaboration with Russia has helped Indian scientists in developing several crucial raw materials, a defence scientist said here.

“As a spin off, various materials that could have domestic application including in the field of medicine also have been identified. Besides a number of technologies have come to us,†Dr S Sundararajan, Scientist, G, Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad, said here on Tuesday evening.
He said Indian scientists had to manufacture high quality missiles for exports and hence had to go into the minute details of various raw materials. These scientists who were now well versed with the parameters for making “high quality and strong materials and dyes have made the country self-reliant in many ways in the field of missiles,†he added.

Sunderarajan was addressing a session on “Challenges in achieving global quality — CAGQ 2004†at the Thyagaraja College of Engineering.

“If we can make Brahmos which is more superior than the SCUD and TOMOHAWK missiles, and are in a position to export them, it means the country can make several products of international quality.â€

“The missile programme, especially the failures, had helped the scientists go for more improvement in quality and achieving perfection. It has helped to produce premium quality products. A stage has come where none of the Indian products will be rejected,†he said.

Sundararajan said various research activities were on to increase the shelf-life of missiles since they would be used only during wars.

He said the involvement of private sector companies such as Larsen and Tubro and Godrej had also helped the country in speeding up the research activities, besides reducing the cost and achieving optimum use of research facilities.
Several non-metallic materials, including ‘Radone’, that would have a variety of applications have come to the country.

He also suggested that the colleges should introduce “ME (Master of Engineering) course in Quality system†which was in great demand.
