Hi,
What are the chances of a Brahmos acting as SAM in future ?
Is it Possible to develop such variant of Brahmos.
no due to the following reasons:
1)brahmos is too heavy at 3 tons(an atbm weighs less than 1 ton).
2)too slow at 3m (an atbm has around 4-5 m).
3)it will require major modifications to the guidance system, and also modifications to the airframe like tvc, this will meen a completely redesigned missile.
4)there are reports that india and russia are jointly developing a very long range air to air missile(brahmos corporation),known as ks172 which weighs 750kgs(1/4th the weight of brahmos),has a range of 400kms and a speed of 5m,also india is developing an indigenous atbm having a range of 160kms and a speed of 5m based on the akash missile system.
5)i believe that if ks172 is siccessfully developed it can be more easily modified for surface to air roles as compared to the brahmos.
therefore i dont think that there is any requirement for the modification of a brahmos to a sam role. :coffee

well this missile was to be developed by novator ,but the project was dropped due to lack of funds india expressed interest in it and it was reported in the media that this would be the next project to be handled by the brahmos corporation .for more info check :
