Australia has called on the Iranian Government for an explanation after it used an Australian-sourced technical instrument to test enriched uranium samples.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer says Australia exported the mass spectrometer to Iran under the strict conditions that it be used in agricultural and medical research.

He says the breach occurred despite strong messages to Iran about the pursuit of sensitive nuclear technologies.

"We've explained to the Iranian Government that they have breached their export conditions and sought a full explanation from them and asked Iran to return the instrument if we ... can't be confident that it will adhere to the strict conditions governing the instruments use", Mr Downer said.

He told Parliament that Australia was told about the incident by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and hopes that making it public ensures it never happens again.

The United States, which claims Iran is secretly developing nuclear weapons, along with Canada and Australia, had been pushing for a tough draft United Nations resolution criticizing Iran for failing to declare sensitive parts of its nuclear program.

I don't know who made us the world policeman?? I think it's quite hypocritical on our part when we have thousands of nuclear warheads ourselves but we still dictate to other nations on whether they should or should not pursue nuclear weapons.

Michael, you appear to have made a selective quote. The issue is that the sale was conditional, Iran accepted the conditions of sale, and has breached it.

If you want to discuss busting the USA's reproductive organs, maybe you could start another thread.

Australia's concern has nothing to do with what the US may think. We have done the same when we have sold other nations helicopters for relief work, and then find out that they have turned them into gunships. Basically, and we are historically persistent with this, is that if you breach conditions, then we don't sell to you again, or we monitor your honesty a lot harder the next time around - assuming we still want to do business with you.

An Internationally accepted conditional contract is a contract. Break it, and you face normal vendor discontent.

Read the leader...
Australia was told about the incident by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
Last time I checked, the IAEA wasn't the US.

My apologies gf0012. You are right, I did make a very selective quote which was not relevant to the topic of the post.

No worries, I was just wanting to make sure the thread didn't get hijacked and then lose the message as a result. ;)
